California Girl Is Licensed To Own A Unicorn If She Locates One
A six-year-old girl has been given permission to legally own a unicorn—but only if she can locate one.

Last month, the girl, who goes by the name Madeline, wrote to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control to ask for permission to keep the fabled animal. Dear LA County, I would like your permission if I can have a unicorn in my backyard, if I can find one, she wrote in a handwritten letter that was posted to the department's Facebook page. Would you kindly respond in writing?

Director Marcia Mayeda praised the 6-year-old's dedication to "responsible pet ownership" in her response to her letter. The department wrote that it was always encouraging to hear from young people who carefully consider what is needed to give animals a loving home.

A "preapproved unicorn license" was given out by the authorities, but there were some restrictions. According to the department's letter, Madeline was required to provide her pet unicorn with "regular access to sunlight, moonbeams, and rainbow".
