The James M. Dixon Foundation For Alzheimer's Research And Support: Empowering Caregivers And Transforming Dementia Care

ATLANTA, GA – The James M. Dixon Foundation for Alzheimer’s Research and Support, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, continues to make strides in transforming the landscape of Alzheimer’s care with a unique focus on cultural sensitivity, caregiver empowerment, and equitable access to resources. Founded by Dr. Lori-Renee Dixon James, the organization was established to honor the legacy of James M. Dixon, whose battle with Alzheimer's disease led to the creation of a foundation that is changing lives and making a lasting impact, especially in underrepresented and underserved communities.

The Foundation is dedicated to leading the fight against Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) through a multifaceted approach that includes research, education, advocacy, and compassionate community-based initiatives. The organization's mission is threefold: to improve the quality of life for those affected by dementia and their caregivers, raise awareness and promote prevention, and to support groundbreaking Alzheimer’s research.

“The James M. Dixon Foundation was born out of love, loss, and the desire to ensure no one has to face Alzheimer’s alone,” said Dr. Lori-Renee Dixon James, Founder and President. “Our work is rooted in a deep commitment to equity in dementia care. We provide real, tangible support to the families and caregivers often left behind by traditional systems of care. Our focus is always on the people—their stories, their needs, and their potential to thrive when given the right support.”

The Foundation's innovative programs have been designed to directly address the unique challenges faced by caregivers and those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. One such initiative is Daddy’s Closet, a community-driven resource providing essential hygiene, personal care, and nutrition items to seniors and those living with Alzheimer’s disease. This program alleviates the financial burden for caregivers, particularly in marginalized communities.

Another key program is the Intentional Caregiver Initiative, which includes workshops, a retreat, a podcast series, and guidebooks aimed at empowering caregivers with practical tools, emotional support, and strategies for self-care. The Bedtime Stories Podcast, which features soothing book readings for seniors, is also part of the initiative, offering caregivers a brief respite while enhancing bedtime routines for their loved ones.

In 2025, the Foundation will launch Dental Day, a program designed to connect caregivers with local dentists for cleanings and basic exams while providing respite support during the appointments. Additionally, the Youth Caregiver Project, slated for launch in 2025, will provide educational workshops and peer connections for young caregivers, recognizing and supporting their invaluable contributions.

At the heart of the Foundation’s work is a commitment to addressing disparities in care, access, and outcomes that disproportionately affect Black and Brown families. As part of this effort, the Foundation is leading the Black ADRD Collective, a national collaborative of organizations working to serve individuals affected by dementia and expand the reach of resources across these communities.

“We’re creating a collective effort to ensure that Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t disproportionately affect people in communities that are already underserved,” Dr. Lori continued. “Our Foundation is built on the understanding that one size doesn’t fit all, and that caregiving must be culturally responsive to meet the real needs of families.”

Through strategic partnerships, grassroots efforts, and educational resources, the James M. Dixon Foundation is driving change that goes beyond awareness and advocacy. Its initiatives are having a profound impact on caregivers, providing them with access to much-needed resources, including scholarships for students pursuing careers in neurology and primary care.

The Foundation’s Purple Affair gala in 2024 attracted nearly 400 guests and raised awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, challenges faced by this community, and the need for support. The 2024 Annual Intentional Caregiver Luncheon Workshop provided immediate and actionable resources for 100 caregivers. Dr. Lori’s leadership has been recognized at both the local and national levels, including a nomination by the Atlanta Airport Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association as the Top Ten Business Woman of 2024. Additionally, she has been sought after to deliver keynote addresses for major caregiving and professional organizations.

The Foundation’s efforts are not just recognized locally—they’re making waves nationwide, expanding its reach across Georgia, California, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Dr. Lori and the Foundation’s dedicated staff, volunteers, board members, and community partners are actively building a national presence while remaining deeply rooted in the communities they serve.

"We don’t just support caregivers—we see them. We listen, we advocate, and we build programs that meet them where they are," Dr. Lori emphasized. “Every program we create is driven by real stories and real needs. We are not a one-size-fits-all organization—we are a people-first movement.”

In addition to its community-based efforts, the Foundation’s work is also informed by storytelling, books, and media. Initiatives like The 1000 Minute Rule for Caregivers, The Intentional Caregiver Handbook, and My Father Has Dementia, My Mother Has Denial books, written by Dr. Lori, are designed to change the narrative around caregiving, memory loss, and identity, empowering families to navigate the challenges of dementia with dignity and resilience.

Looking ahead, the James M. Dixon Foundation remains committed to its mission of creating lasting change and providing essential support to caregivers and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The organization continues to invite collaboration with organizations, leaders, and community members to redefine what dementia care and support look like for every family.
