World's Largest Menorah?
Nationwide – January 1st, 2025(USANews.com) –Syracuse, the heart of New York, at the center of the city, a grand menorah stands tall with a message: "Happy Chanukah. Let's light up the world with peace." Towering at a height of 33 feet and stretching over 180 feet wide, this monumental art installation by Menachem Mordechai Shiloh graces the bustling I-690 corridor right in the middle of the downtown. Its sleek, angular design and radiant glow serve as a powerful symbol of faith, unity, and renewal, reflecting the city’s spirit of transformation. World renowned vintage curator, Kevin Montague calls it “The Modernist Menorah” and continued, “This is a piece you would expect to see first in a place like NYC!” Dov Popack, the NYC developer who is purchasing the property and who organized the installation said, “Syracuse sits in the center of all the largest cities in the Northeast. It’s the center point between NYC and Toronto, four hours from Boston and Philadelphia. Four and a half hours from Montreal and Pittsburgh and 5 and a half hours from D.C and Cleveland. What a place to share the light of the Menorah.”
The menorah’s presence aligns with Syracuse’s $1.5 billion infrastructure revitalization project that is reconnecting the downtown, solidifying Syracuse as the heart and crossroads of New York State. Together, the menorah and the city’s vision shine brightly as beacons of hope, innovation, and a brighter future for all. As Menachem likes to say, “ The number that is synonymous with Syracuse is 44. There were 11 All-Americans at Syracuse University that wore this number. 44 is gematria for dom which means blood in Hebrew so it’s a fitting location for the Menorah because Syracuse is the geographical center of New York State and the crossroads of the Northeastern United States.” But I think Rabbi Chaim Pil of Crown Heights Brooklyn said it best, “This may be the biggest menorah in the world!” Happy Chanukah!
