For decades, many families raising children with disabilities faced not only personal challenges, but also a society that struggled to understand them. Throughout the late 1950s, the early to mid-1960s, and particularly during the 1970s and early 1980s, in Australia, parents were often given devastating advice: place a disabled child in institutional care, go home and forget about them, and try again for a "normal" family. It was a painful reflection of attitudes that prioritized separation over support and silence over understanding. Historically, the concept of "disability" was not recognized with the profound understanding and awareness that it today carries in contemporary society.
The question is “What is normal to you”? “What does normality look like for many people who live the realities of life that’s happening around us in today’s society”?
Kerryn Burgoyne grew up witnessing those realities. Rather than allowing that history to define her future, she chose to challenge it. Today, she is the founder of KTalk, an autism training and education agency built on lived experience, practical insight, and the belief that genuine understanding begins by listening to people who have lived the journey themselves.
A Mission Shaped By Real Life
KTalk was never created to compete with large training organizations or academic institutions. Instead, it was built to fill a gap that Kerryn believes still exists today.
Many autism education programs are developed through research, clinical practice, or institutional expertise. KTalk offers something equally valuable but often less visible: education shaped by real life.
Every course reflects Kerryn's own lessons taught from life’s experiences, observations, and years spent understanding where she belongs in society from what she describes as "from the outside in."
This unique perspective enables her to connect deeply with parents, carers, families, and organizations looking for meaningful guidance over abstract theory. Rather than offering detached corporate programs, KTalk provides authentic training and conversations rooted in compassion, empathy, and genuine lived experience.
As a sole trader, Kerryn openly acknowledges the challenges of standing alongside larger organizations, well-known speakers, psychologists, and psychiatrists.
KTalk's primary strength is its personal approach; its boutique scale ensures each lesson remains deeply human and focused on driving meaningful change, rather than merely replicating the standardized information delivery of larger corporations.
Turning Rejection Into Purpose
Kerryn often describes herself as someone who lives “in the unknown or outside the square box," a paraphrase that reflects both her outlook and her journey.
For a long time, Kerryn faced continuous setbacks and repeated rejection while seeking employment. As numerous opportunities slipped away, she devastatingly dealt with the deep frustration of being constantly left out, leaving her strong determination and ability to contribute significantly to any company or organization completely overlooked.
Ultimately, this challenging journey shaped her unique perspective and profound outlook on life.
Instead of letting these professional disappointments dictate her path, she stopped waiting for doors to open and chose to go her own way instead. What initially began as personal adversity, slowly evolved into her true calling.
Deeply anchored by her very deep Christian faith, Kerryn believes KTalk is more than a business. She views it as "a ministry of life"—a purpose calling, she knows her great & wonderful God set before her to turn adversity into hope and service.
Kerryn has consistently maintained a deeply hopeful outlook, refusing to give up on life regardless of the challenges she faces. Whenever obstacles hinder her dreams, she invariably discovers a path to overcome them, scaling structural brick walls/barriers to get to the other side, and explore new horizons and embrace very rare, monumental opportunities for herself.
That conviction has carried her far beyond the disappointments of the past. Today, Kerryn is an international author, speaker, founder, advocate, and course creator, whose work continues to help families, carers, businesses, and individuals better understand autism while building stronger, more inclusive communities.

Why Lived Experience Matters
One question sits at the heart of KTalk's philosophy:
What changes when people who have been misunderstood are finally allowed to teach?
For Kerryn, the answer is simple. Everything.
Lived experience offers insights that cannot always be found in textbooks or research papers. It provides practical understanding shaped by everyday challenges, resilience, and personal growth. Rather than discussing autism from a distance, Kerryn shares perspectives developed through years of navigating misunderstanding while discovering practical ways forward.
Her courses encourage families to better support loved ones, help organizations rethink workplace inclusion, and remind autistic individuals that their experiences have value.
As Kerryn says, "I've got courses that nobody else has got. And that's the whole thing."
A Practical Learning Library
KTalk currently offers six comprehensive online courses, each developed to address real challenges faced by autistic individuals, families, carers, and employers.
Aspektism for Teens and Adults supports older individuals navigating life on the autism spectrum with practical guidance tailored to adulthood.
Autism and Mental Health explores emotional wellbeing and the mental health challenges that often accompany autism while encouraging greater understanding and compassionate support.
Recognising the importance of meaningful employment, Kerryn created the course Employism (Company Edition) to help organizations build more inclusive workplaces and Employism (Family Edition) to prepare families and carers for supporting autistic loved ones as they move toward employment.
The final two courses, Power of Positivity and The Goal, extend beyond autism education to focus on resilience, confidence, personal growth, and purposeful living.
Each program includes course materials, quizzes, and video lessons, allowing participants to learn at their own pace while gaining practical tools they can apply immediately in everyday life.
Instead of being developed from library research or external books, these self-help resources have been drawn directly from Kerryn's stored memories, allowing the necessary information to flow straight from her personal insights.
Together, these six courses form a learning library that moves beyond awareness alone. They help learners build understanding, confidence, independence, stronger relationships, and more inclusive communities.
Changing The Conversation Around Employment
Employment remains one of the issues closest to Kerryn's heart/soul as it reflects her own experiences of exclusion.
She understands the discouragement of being overlooked, the frustration of not receiving a fair opportunity, and the lasting impact that repeated rejection can have on confidence.
Those experiences inspired the Employism courses.
Rather than expecting autistic individuals alone to adapt, the Company Edition encourages employers to rethink recruitment, onboarding, consistent communication, welcome & embrace neurodiversity, sensory needs, and long-term inclusion.
The Family Edition helps parents and carers prepare loved ones for meaningful employment while building confidence and practical life skills.
For Kerryn, employment is not simply about finding jobs. It is about creating workplaces where neurological differences are respected, understood, and valued.
This expansive perspective underscores the core philosophy embedded within all KTalk courses: fostering acceptance to dismantle obsolete assumptions, and prioritizing understanding over exclusion.
More Than Education
KTalk is not simply an autism training provider.
It is the result of one woman's strong desire, exceptional determination to transform personal hardship into something that improves the lives of others.
Every challenge Kerryn faced became an opportunity to create resources that educate, empower, engage, inspire, and encourage. Every closed door became motivation to open one for someone else.
Her work reminds people that expertise does not always come from academic qualifications alone. It mainly comes from resilience, or lived experiences, empathy, compassion, and the willingness to share lessons learnt from life's greatest challenges.
Building A More Understanding Future
As conversations surrounding neurodiversity continue to grow, KTalk is helping shape a future where autism is met with greater understanding, respect, empowerment, impact and opportunity.
Whether supporting a family member, strengthening workplace inclusion, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of autism, learners will find practical guidance grounded in authenticity, rather than theory alone.
Kerryn Burgoyne built KTalk to be explored, shared, and used to create lasting change. She remains dedicated to a straightforward yet impactful goal across all her courses, talks, and interactions: replacing confusion with awareness, inclusion, and expectation for the future of any child, sibling, or individual on the autism spectrum.
