A Voice Forged Through Loss And Survival

Just days after completing her latest EP, The Rebirth, singer-songwriter Debbi James found herself fighting for her life in a hospital bed.

A deadly bacterial infection had triggered complete heart failure and multiple organ shutdown. Doctors rushed her into emergency open heart surgery and warned her loved ones that her chances of survival were less than ten percent. Even if she survived, they said, she might never walk, sing, or perform again.

Today, Debbi James is back on stage doing exactly what once seemed impossible.

For the internationally touring vocalist, performer, and songwriter, survival has become more than a personal triumph. It has become the emotional core of her artistry.

“Music is healing,” James says. “It’s a universal language that connects people no matter where they come from.”

That belief has guided her through heartbreak, reinvention, and an extraordinary rise from personal tragedy to global stages alongside some of the biggest names in entertainment.

From Heartbreak To The World Stage

Long before she was performing in arenas around the world, Debbi James was learning how to survive loss.

Born into a family connected to entertainment and creativity, she is the daughter of actor and martial artist Steve James, known for iconic films including American Ninja, Delta Force, and I’m Gonna Git You Sucka. But behind the Hollywood legacy came devastating grief.

Her father passed away from pancreatic cancer when she was still a child. Years later, James lost her mother in another heartbreaking tragedy at only sixteen years old.

Rather than allowing those experiences to define her limits, she transformed them into motivation.

At eighteen, James moved to the United States alone without speaking English, determined to pursue a career in music and performance. She immersed herself in a completely unfamiliar culture while learning the language and navigating one of the world’s most competitive entertainment industries from the ground up.

That determination eventually led her to Los Angeles, where she trained with leading vocal coaches, producers, and choreographers while refining the artistry that would later define her career.

Building An International Career

James first gained major industry attention as a semi finalist on The X Factor in Israel, where her vocal ability and stage presence introduced her to a wider audience.

Her career continued accelerating as she expanded beyond singing into dance and live performance. She opened for Jennifer Lopez during the It’s My Party Tour, further solidifying her presence on major international stages.

She later performed in The Usher Experience residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, showcasing her versatility as a vocalist and live performer in one of the entertainment capital’s most high-profile productions.

Since 2019, she has toured internationally as Enrique Iglesias’ lead female vocalist, performing as his main vocalist and primary on-stage female voice alongside his global productions. While sharing stages during the Trilogy Tour with Pitbull and Ricky Martin, her primary role remains performing directly with Enrique Iglesias as his lead female vocalist.

She continues performing with Enrique Iglesias to this day, and her next scheduled appearance is June 28 at the FIFA World Cup event in Monterrey, Mexico, where she will be part of a headlining lineup alongside Chayanne and Imagine Dragons.

What separates James from many artists, however, is not simply versatility. It is authentic.

“I’m not here to compete with anyone,” she says. “I’m here to connect with people through honesty, emotion, and real experiences.”

Creating Music Without Boundaries

James’ artistry reflects a lifetime of cultural influences and emotional experiences. Her music blends pop, soul, R&B, funk, jazz, rock, EDM, Latin music, and contemporary global sounds into a style uniquely her own.

That openness to experimentation became especially visible in her collaboration with legendary Cuban singer songwriter Descemer Bueno on a bilingual remake of “Preciosa.” The track is a remake of his iconic hit song “Preciosa,” reimagined in a modern cross-cultural arrangement.

The collaboration also includes a beautifully produced music video now available on YouTube, with the song streaming across all major platforms worldwide.

The project blends Hebrew and Spanish, symbolizing unity between cultures while reinforcing James’ belief that music can transcend borders, language, and division.

For James, every project carries emotional intention.

She explains that her goal is not simply entertainment, but connection. Through music, she hopes to offer listeners relief, healing, and emotional honesty during difficult moments in their own lives.

“If my story can help even one person feel less alone, then I know I’m doing what I was meant to do,” she says.

The Meaning Behind The Rebirth

Her latest EP, The Rebirth, became the most personal expression of that philosophy.

Created in collaboration with Delphi Music Group, the project explores a sophisticated blend of soul, funk, jazz, and contemporary R&B. James describes it as her “grown and sexy” era, showcasing both artistic maturity and emotional vulnerability.

The EP quickly gained international attention, with the single “The Things That Were Said,” mixed by acclaimed London producer Soulpersona, reaching the number one position on the UK Soul Charts.

But shortly after completing the project, James’ life threatening medical emergency transformed the meaning of the title entirely.

What began as a musical evolution became a literal rebirth.

Surviving emergency surgery and returning to performance gave her a radically different perspective on purpose, gratitude, and creativity. Today, she approaches music not only as an artist, but as someone deeply aware of how fragile life can become without warning.

That awareness has infused her performances with even greater emotional depth.
