Inside Bernklau & Company, The Firm Building Tomorrow’s Companies

5 out of 10 of all new businesses do not survive five years. Bernklau has built a model to help startups and small companies become the half that does.

A New Model For Building Companie

Every generation of business has its builders. The industrial age had family firms that lasted a hundred years. The internet age had venture capital. Bernklau & Company believes the next era belongs to something in between: firms that bring knowledge, people, systems into a company and stay for the long run.

At first glance, Bernklau looks like a consulting firm. Look closer and it is something more ambitious. It owns businesses, holds stakes in the companies it works with, and helps founders build new ventures from the very beginning. Its focus is the companies that need this most: startups and small businesses that have the ideas and the drive, but not yet the structure to last.

The Problem Worth Solving

Small businesses are the backbone of the economy, but most of them are on their own. In the European Union, 99% of all businesses are small and medium-sized companies, providing jobs for more than 85 million people. In the United States, there are more than 36 million small businesses. Yet survival is hard. According to US Bureau of Labor Statistics data, about one in five new businesses closes in its first year, and about half are gone within five years.

Established companies face a different challenge. In Germany alone, about 100,000 small and medium-sized businesses look for a new owner every year, according to the German development bank KfW, and many are not ready for that step.

Bernklau’s view is that most of these companies do not fail because of bad ideas. They fail because the business behind the idea is not well organised. Marketing, sales, finance and operations grow separately, and the company grows faster than its foundations. “We don’t build ‘offers.’ We build systems of value,” says founder Brandon Bernklau. “We don’t chase trends. We create long-term structures that evolve with time.”

The Model: Growing With The Company

Most firms offer one product at one price. Bernklau offers a path. A founder can start with the firm’s free resources, designed to help turn an idea into a first paying customer. The next step is the Bernklau Academy, a low-cost programme for founders turning early traction into their first thousands in revenue. From there, companies can work with the team on a project or hourly basis, with business structuring and setup offered. Companies that need ongoing support can move to a monthly retainer, where Bernklau acts as a long-term strategic and operating partner.

At the top is the venture studio. Here, Bernklau works deeply inside of companies, bringing its team, systems, contacts and more. Instead of charging large upfront fees, it takes a share of the company or its revenue. Because this means more time and more risk for the firm, it accepts only a limited number of studio partners. The path also helps Bernklau choose well: by the time a founder reaches the studio, the firm already knows how they work.

Behind this sits the rest of the firm. A consulting team covers strategy and management. Bernklau also owns businesses of its own, including an investment business, a marketing business and more. Each part feeds the others, so a company working with Bernklau gains access to all of it.

What It Means For Startups

For a young company, the biggest opportunity is access. Most startups cannot afford to hire a head of strategy, a sales lead, a marketing team and a finance expert at the same time. Through Bernklau, they can work with all of them as one team.

Startups also gain a wide network and a partner that helps them prepare for what comes later, from talking to investors to, one day, selling the company. Bernklau has already advised on company sales.

What It Means For Medium Companies

For established small businesses, the opportunities are different but just as real. Bernklau helps companies plan who takes over next and set up holding structures that protect what they have built. It helps businesses fix costs that quietly hold them back, enter new markets such as Dubai, and relocate when a new country offers a better base. In each case, the goal is the same: a company that is stronger, simpler to run and ready for its next chapter.

Built To Last

The firm’s standards come from an unusual place. Its founder comes from his family’s steel construction business in Germany. In steel, a beam either holds the weight or it does not. Bernklau uses the same test for every company it works with: before asking how fast it can grow, ask what is holding it up.

“In a world obsessed with speed, we champion substance. Our goal is not only to help you grow fast, but to help you grow strong.”

The Road Ahead

Millions of small companies have the ideas and the drive, but not the structure or the partners to last. Bernklau wants to change that, one company at a time. “The companies we build transform society,” Bernklau says. “Every strategy, from sales to brand, is aligned under one vision: to turn clarity into growth.” If the model works, Bernklau will not be remembered as a consulting firm, but as the partner behind a new generation of companies built to last.
