Leaning Into Risk and Reinvention: Grace Sammon's Journey to Creative Authenticity

Award-winning author and radio host Grace Sammon explores reinvention and the power of embracing risk in her career and personal life.

May 6, 2026

Grace Sammon is an award-winning author, radio host, educator, and entrepreneur, known for her unwavering dedication to amplifying the voices of others. What sets her apart, however, isn’t the list of accomplishments—it’s her commitment to reinvention and her willingness to keep risking change, even at the height of success.

Currently a recipient of the 2025 Indies United Publishing House’s Award for Inspirational Women in Literature, Media, and Journalism, Grace is no stranger to transformation. She began her career as a university administrator. When that imploded, Grace, half-jokingly, says she started her “spaghetti against the wall” phase—an era of curiosity-driven experimentation where she tried, built, failed, learned, and tried again.

She went on to found a nonprofit organization focused on teacher education, followed by several additional nonprofit and for-profit ventures, each one an intentional test rather than a fixed destination. Some efforts stuck, others didn’t, but each clarified what mattered most: creating space for voices that are too often overlooked.

She has authored seven books, including the LAUNCH PAD series, which provides invaluable guidance for writers navigating the world of writing, publishing, and marketing their work. Her fourth book and debut novel, The Eves, earned critical acclaim and marked a pivotal moment in her career.

Grace’s characters in The Eves taught her that it was time to add her own voice to those that deserved to be lifted up. It was this realization that inspired her latest projects, including the upcoming novel, The Reliable Narrator, a work that explores themes of silence, invisibility, and what it costs, especially for women, to be the keeper of other people’s stories while sidelining one’s own.

A Shift in Focus: Embracing Risk and Authenticity

For much of her career, Grace has helped others find their voices, serving as an educator in largely under-served communities, as a book coach, and as a radio host. As the host of The Storytellers and LAUNCH PAD, both multi-award-winning radio shows, Grace has dedicated herself to helping writers share their stories with the world. Yet, in recent years, Grace noticed a shift in her own creative journey.

“I realized that being ‘the reliable narrator’ for everyone else had become a kind of hiding place,” says Grace. “I was playing it safe by helping others find and tell their stories while keeping my own story at arm’s length. Most authors are horrible at self promotion. We want to write. To tout our work or successes is uncomfortable.”

Now, Grace is embracing risk more often, opting for curiosity over certainty. This shift is evident in both her writing and her personal life, as she leans into the discomfort of learning and being vulnerable. Her current projects reflect this newfound embrace of uncertainty and emotional risk, with The Reliable Narrator tackling the complexities of invisibility and personal reinvention.

“My writing has become more about stepping into discomfort and telling the truth even when it’s messier or less flattering,” Grace explains. “I’m challenging myself in new ways around both the business and the craft of writing. I think both those things are seeing traction with the May 2026 release of The Reliable Narrator. For me, it’s about taking risks emotionally, creatively, and personally, allowing myself to be seen.”

The Reliable Narrator: Confronting Silence and Stepping Into One’s Own Voice

Grace’s latest novel, The Reliable Narrator, follows the journey of a ghostwriter who excels at making others shine but must confront the hidden parts of herself in order to finally step into her own voice. This novel is not just a story about friendship and resilience,  but also a personal exploration of what it means to silence oneself for the sake of others and the cost of doing so.

“While writing The Reliable Narrator, I aimed for richly atmospheric settings and I forced myself to fearlessly engage with difficult, layered issues: autonomy at the end of life, cycles of harm, ownership of stories, the boundaries of privacy, and the heavy cost of keeping the truth buried,” Grace reflects. This book is a culmination of Grace’s own journey of reinvention, one that mirrors her ongoing commitment to living authentically, without hiding behind the stories of others.

Risking the Truth in Honestly, David

Grace’s exploration of risk continues with her next novel, Honestly, David, which delves into the subtle ways we manipulate or withhold ourselves in relationships. While The Reliable Narrator addresses silence and invisibility, Honestly, David explores the consequences of selective truth in the context of personal relationships.

“This book is about what happens when someone appears emotionally fluent, deeply attentive, but isn’t actually being honest. It’s about when you love someone you can’t fully trust,” Grace explains. The themes of truth and power are explored in depth, as Grace reflects on the delicate balance of vulnerability, honesty, and self-protection in relationships.

Both novels are deeply intertwined with Grace’s own philosophy of creative risk, choosing to confront the uncomfortable truths within herself and her characters, and asking readers to do the same.

The Power of Reinvention

Grace Sammon’s journey is one of reinvention, something she encourages her readers and clients to embrace as well. As a successful author, radio host, and entrepreneur, she could have chosen to stay within the confines of her established identity. Instead, she has chosen to continuously evolve, using her creativity as a tool for personal and professional growth.

At this stage of her career, Grace’s focus is not on maintaining the status quo but on challenging herself and taking risks that pushes all her boundaries. It’s a lesson in reinvention for anyone, at any stage of life or career: the key to growth is in embracing discomfort, curiosity, and vulnerability.

For Grace, while she will always first and foremost be there to lift up other’s voices, she is, finally, becoming the narrator of her own story, taking creative and emotional risks along the way.

The Future: New Projects and Continued Transformation

Grace’s transformation continues with a variety of exciting projects in the works. In addition to her current books, she is looking to develop two new radio shows, expanding her literary impact, and continuing to inspire others to take risks and share their voices.

“I want to create work that risks something, emotionally, creatively, personally,” she says. “That’s what matters most to me now: being awake, being honest, and allowing myself to keep reinventing, keep growing.”
