Nabanita De Is Rewriting the Rules of AI

The founder built the world's first privacy operating system for the AI era.

In 1994, a Dutch software engineer named Martijn Koster created robots.txt, a simple file that told search engines which pages they could crawl. It became the quiet handshake that governed the open web for three decades. Today, as artificial intelligence consumes the internet at a scale Koster never imagined, that old handshake no longer holds. Nabanita De believes the moment has come for a new one. And she is building it.

From Detecting Fake News to building a New Trust Layer

De's path to reshaping digital privacy began with a problem that gripped the world. During her master's studies at UMass Amherst's Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, she led the team that built FiB, a Chrome extension that detected fake news on Facebook. The project won the Google Moonshot Prize at Princeton University and was named among the top five news stories of 2016.

The response was staggering. More than 1,000 media outlets covered the work, including the Washington Post, Wired, CNN, and the BBC. Universities such as Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and Wharton featured it in their programs. The recognition earned De an invitation to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit by the Forbes under 30 team and confirmed a belief she had carried since building her first app at eighteen: technology should protect people, not exploit them.

Her first venture, Bluetooth Messenger, was downloaded by 50,000 users, topped the App Store's "New and Rising" category worldwide, and won the BITSAA Mantra Entrepreneur of the Year award. It was the first sign of an entrepreneur who treated big problems as invitations rather than obstacles.

Building the Privacy Operating System

Over the following years, De became a privacy, security, and AI leader inside some of the world's most influential companies. At Uber, Microsoft Research, Paramount, and across fintech, she built systems handling exabytes of data for billions of customers. Her work saved more than $5 billion in costs. She collected over 51 technology awards along the way, including recognition as a Facebook Scholar for Women in Cyber Security, a Microsoft Grace Hopper Scholar, and Webby honors. She also won more than 20 hackathons, among them the Global AWS GenAI Hackathon against 3,000 participants  and YCombinator Hackathon.

Yet the deeper she went, the clearer the problem became. Privacy compliance was broken. Businesses drowned in manual, siloed processes that changed with every new regulation, all while facing enormous fines. So De founded Privacy License, which she describes as the world's first privacy operating system for the AI era.

The vision is ambitious but practical. Privacy License unifies compliance into a single integrated stack. Its layers include Data Rights and Provenance, where a machine-readable license travels with content; Privacy Program-in-a-Box for automated regulatory gap analysis; Enforcement and Governance through Privacy Guardian Agents that convert laws into code; and a Shadow AI System that gives companies real-time visibility into AI usage. Developer tools, data anonymization through PrivacyGPT, and model fairness testing round out the platform.

The promise is simple to state and hard to deliver: lower compliance costs, faster time-to-compliance, fewer fines, and privacy transformed into a competitive advantage.

Robots.txt With Legal Teeth

At the center of De's work sits the AI Privacy License, a creation she calls "robots.txt with legal teeth." Where the original protocol politely asked crawlers to behave, the AI Privacy License makes rights legally enforceable and machine-readable. It functions as an internet contract that lets creators and AI companies operate as partners under shared standards.

The implications for Hollywood, journalism, music, and every creative field are profound. Actors, filmmakers, writers, and artists can gain legal control over their digital likeness and their work. AI companies, in turn, receive clean, regulated data rights packaged for legitimate use. Instead of endless conflict, De envisions a marketplace built on trust.

"Privacy is not the enemy of innovation," her philosophy holds. It is the foundation of it. By reimagining privacy as an automated trust layer, De aims to unlock new markets rather than restrict them. Creators protect their rights. Companies innovate without fear. Both sides win.

A Track Record of Moonshots

De's ambition extends well beyond the boardroom. She founded the Nabanita De Foundation to tackle humanitarian moonshot challenges through technology, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. The foundation has built partnerships with Forbes, Audible, and Amazon, and its initiatives have reached 135 countries.

Her voice carries weight in the public conversation as well. She has written 20 Forbes articles read more than 500,000 times, earned three Pulitzer Prize nominations, and landed on Fast Company's World Changing Ideas list.

Her generosity is equally documented. De has volunteered for more than 100 nonprofits. As a UNICEF state lead, she helped raise $134 million from the United States government and supported the passage of two national legislation bills. During the pandemic, she built CovidHelpForIndia.com to streamline critical resources. She was named to the BITSAA Global 30 Under 30 list in 2022 for her social entrepreneurship leadership. Along the way, she also won Miss India Seattle and walked in shows including North America Fashion Week, proof that her range refuses easy categories.

The Human Behind the Mission

What makes De compelling is not the length of her résumé, impressive as it is. It is the consistency of her purpose. From a fake-news detector built in graduate school to a global privacy operating system, every project traces back to the same conviction: people deserve control over their information and their identity.

She holds a Bachelor's in Engineering and Computer Science from Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani and a Master's in Computer Science from UMass Amherst. Yet her credentials only frame the story. The real narrative is about a builder who saw the internet's foundations cracking under the weight of AI and decided to lay new ones.
