Our team volunteered to perform cleft palate surgeries for children whose families could never afford the procedures. As the anesthesia provider, I was doing the same work I had done countless times before. The surgeons had performed these operations hundreds of times in the United States.

Medically, nothing was different.

Spiritually and emotionally, everything was.

We weren’t there because we had to be. We were there because we chose to serve.

Watching the gratitude on a family’s face after a successful surgery reminded me that the greatest rewards in life rarely come from what we receive. They come from what we are able to give.

That experience forever changed my definition of success.

Success is not simply accumulating wealth, titles, or accomplishments. Those things can create opportunity, but they are not the destination.

True success is reaching a place where your knowledge, experience, and resources become a blessing to someone else.

I’ve learned that the highest form of success is not having more.

It’s becoming the kind of person who can freely give more.
