The Transformation of Ukraine: Tough Markets Test Leaders

With over two decades of experience in corporate strategy and transformation, Nicolai Kiskalt is shaping Ukraine’s recovery and future.

Aug 18, 2025

The Transformation Ukraine refers to the comprehensive economic, political, and social reforms undertaken by Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion that began in February 2022. This process encompasses Ukraine's aspirations for European Union (EU) membership, post-war reconstruction efforts, and societal adaptations amid ongoing conflict. Drawing parallels with historical transformations such as German Reunification and the EU's Eastern Enlargement, the transformation aims to modernize Ukraine's institutions, economy, and infrastructure while addressing demographic shifts and humanitarian challenges. The concept is prominently discussed in reports by international consulting firms, highlighting investment opportunities and international cooperation.

Bridging Expertise and Potential to Transform Ukraine

In the ever-evolving landscape of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), few figures embody the fusion of global consulting prowess and regional passion quite like Nicolai Kiskalt. As the newly appointed Head of Central and Eastern Europe Desk at KPMG in Germany since 2024, Kiskalt brings over two decades of experience in management consulting to bear on one of the region's most pressing challenges: the transformation and reconstruction of Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.

His journey — from international hubs like Paris, London, Utrecht and Düsseldorf to the frontlines of Kyiv — positions him uniquely to guide businesses and governments toward sustainable growth, leveraging KPMG's robust initiatives in the region.

A Storied Career in Management Consulting

Kiskalt's professional trajectory is a testament to his adaptability and strategic acumen. Beginning his career at two highly recognized global management consultancies, he honed his skills in high-stakes advisory roles. From 2006 to 2017, he served in various consultant positions at a French IT giant, rising to Vice President while working across Berlin, London, and Utrecht. In Berlin, he advised private-sector companies and government entities on operational efficiencies. His first London stint saw him build international networks, securing the companies inaugural project with the Indian government. In Utrecht, Kiskalt specialized in value chain optimization, guiding firms through budget constraints and workforce reductions via expert conflict management and teambuilding. Returning to London as Vice President, he led global sales transformation programs for over 200 major clients, demonstrating his expertise in driving large-scale change.

Transitioning to a next-10 audit firm based in Germany in 2018, Kiskalt took the helm as CEO and Founder of Kyiv Strategy Consulting, a Ukrainian subsidiary with 150 employees. Under his leadership, it grew into the country's third-largest management consulting firm. Even amid Russia's 2022 invasion, he maintained operational resilience, evacuating 80 staff members and their families to Germany and Poland while sustaining team motivation. This period underscored his crisis management skills, which he now channels into KPMG Germany's CEE operations, encompassing EU states east of Germany, the Baltics, Southeast Europe, and non-EU Eastern European countries seeking closer ties with Europe – particularly Ukraine.

On LinkedIn, Kiskalt describes himself as "an entrepreneur, a bridge builder, a business engineer, a corporate citizen, and a transformation ambassador," reflecting his multifaceted approach to consulting. His skills span sales transformation, international networking, conflict resolution, and value chain enhancement — core competencies in management consulting that are vital for navigating complex transformations. Kiskalt is known to be sent there where it is difficult.
