On November 15, 2024, UConn women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma reached a historic milestone, tying the NCAA all-time coaching wins record with his 1,216th victory. The achievement came as UConn defeated North Carolina 69-58 in a closely contested matchup, solidifying Auriemma’s place among the greatest coaches in the sport’s history.
Auriemma, who has led the Huskies to 11 national championships since taking over the program in 1985, now shares the record with legendary Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer. The two have been at the forefront of women’s college basketball for decades, shaping the landscape of the sport and mentoring generations of elite players.
The milestone victory was emblematic of UConn’s signature style—suffocating defense and disciplined offensive execution. The Huskies built an early lead behind a strong performance from star forward Aaliyah Edwards, who recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds. UConn’s defense held North Carolina to just 35% shooting, forcing key turnovers in the closing minutes to secure the win.
Following the game, Auriemma reflected on the significance of the moment. “It’s an honor to be mentioned alongside Tara [VanDerveer], who has been such a pioneer for women’s basketball. This record is a testament to the incredible players and staff I’ve had over the years.”
While tying the record is a monumental achievement, Auriemma now has the opportunity to surpass it and become the winningest coach in NCAA women’s basketball history. With UConn off to a strong start this season, it’s only a matter of time before he claims the record outright.
The Huskies will next face a top-10 opponent in their upcoming schedule, with Auriemma looking to officially take the top spot in coaching victories. Meanwhile, the milestone serves as another reminder of UConn’s sustained excellence and dominance in women’s college basketball.
