With St Patrick’s Day putting Irish creativity in the spotlight each year, Diane Jennings’s journey is a reminder that the most interesting careers rarely follow a straight line. The Dublin-born performer has spent the past few years building an international online audience, an unexpected detour that ultimately strengthened her return to acting.
An Unplanned Pivot
Jennings didn’t set out to become a YouTube personality. In fact, the move into content creation began almost accidentally. What started as an impulsive experiment quickly evolved into a career in its own right. Millions of viewers began watching her videos, drawn to a mix of sharp observation, humour, and the slightly irreverent perspective she brings to everyday life.
In hindsight, Jennings regards the five years she stepped away from acting to focus on the unexpected opportunities online, not as a hiatus in her performing career, but as an unconventional form of rehearsal.
“Playing myself online turned out to be the best rehearsal for playing anyone else,” she says.
The experience of speaking directly to the camera, without scripts or filters, reshaped her understanding of performance. Instead of hiding behind characters, she learned how powerful it could be to simply be present.
From Dublin Stages to Global Screens
Creativity has always been central to Jennings’s life. Raised in Dublin City in Ireland, her early years were filled with theatre, education, and art. She later studied English literature and drama before completing a Master’s degree in Film Theory, determined to understand not only how stories are told on screen, but why they resonate.
Over the years, Diane has worn many hats: competing as a Miss Ireland finalist, fronting a rock band, working behind the scenes in screen production, and building a loyal following as a presenter and online personality.
You might not recognise the name, but if the face feels familiar, it probably is. For years she has been popping up on social media and featured in RTÉ television segments, international commercials, and presenting gigs across screens.
While her acting career is evolving gradually, the sudden growth of her online audience introduced a new dimension to her work. Much of that audience, she notes with amusement, came from outside Ireland.
“It was the Americans who encouraged me to keep creating my own work on YouTube." she says. “People thousands of miles away who owed me nothing were the ones saying, ‘Keep going.’”

Over the years, Jennings began to see her content as more than just entertainment. It was a canvas for self-expression and a training ground for acting. Her ability to authentically portray herself online was the catalyst for her return to acting, this time, with a deeper understanding of her craft. “The camera used to feel like a test. Now it feels like an extension of me. We’re like old pals now!” she jokes.
Learning the Craft in Public
The early days of her channel were far from glamorous. Jennings has spoken openly about juggling multiple jobs while trying to be consistent in her online presence, often staying up late into the night recording and editing videos.
“There was a phase where I juggled eight different jobs while editing until three in the morning.” she recalls. “The only thing I could truly control was whether the promised video showed up for my viewers on time. People can sympathize with excuses when life gets tough, but if you really want to do it, just do it.” Through deaths, house moves, and marathon international travel schedules, Jennings never missed an upload, posting consistently three times a week.
But the effort paid off. Over time, the channel grew to more than 100 million views, giving Jennings something actors rarely experience: a creative outlet where effort produces immediate results.
“With YouTube, what you put in is what you get out.” she says. “If you work harder, the audience responds. Acting doesn’t work like that. One day you land an amazing role, and the next day you’re back looking for the next opportunity. There’s no corporate ladder.”
Returning to Acting With Clarity
After five years focused on content creation, Jennings is stepping back into acting with a fresh perspective.
Earlier, she says, her work came from pure hunger, “sometimes literally,” driven by the need to prove herself.
That pressure has lifted. “Now there are people around the world who think I’m pretty interesting, I guess,” she adds wryly. “They’re rooting for me, and that’s a little bit magical.”
As she re-enters the audition circuit, Diane brings a new approach shaped by her years as a creator. Instead of vanishing completely into characters, she draws on authentic parts of herself she once kept guarded. Speaking about her approach to acting now, she explains: “I’m not trying to convince the audience of anything. I’m just telling the truth, even when the story isn’t mine.”

An Irish Perspective With Global Reach
For Jennings, the past few years have reinforced something she suspects many Irish creatives understand instinctively: the world often responds to authenticity more than polish.
Her online audience may span continents, but her voice remains distinctly Irish, combining humour, curiosity, and a slightly sideways view of the world.
And as St Patrick’s Day celebrates Irish culture on a global stage, Jennings’s story feels particularly fitting. A reminder that Irish creativity has always thrived in unexpected places.
Looking Ahead
Today, Jennings continues to balance acting with content creation, moving fluidly between the two worlds. The experience of building her own platform has given her something many performers spend years searching for: creative independence.
The detour into YouTube may have been accidental, but the lessons it taught her were lasting.
“Five years away didn’t cool the fire,” she says. “If anything, it made the passion for expression deeper.”
