How Space Penguin Fixes the Workspace Trust Gap

An Australian startup is solving the guesswork behind every "work from anywhere" desk.

Consider booking a "quiet" workspace for an important client call. You arrive, and the room sits beside a construction site. The Wi-Fi that looked reliable on the listing cannot hold the connection. The space looks nothing like its photos. None of that appears in a star rating, until it is already happening.

The Problem Nobody Fixed

Almost every remote and hybrid worker has quietly learned to put up with this gamble. The short-term workspace industry grew enormously over the past five years. Australia's market alone is now worth an estimated $537 million, and it nearly doubled in size between 2020 and 2025. Yet the trust problem underneath all that growth went unsolved.

That frustration is what led Rohan Mehrotra and Alisha Aneja to build Space Penguin. The two co-founders kept running into the same guessing game themselves. Existing platforms could tell you a desk existed. None of them could tell you what it was actually like to work there.

"For too long, finding a reliable place to work outside the office has meant a gamble: unreliable Wi-Fi, noisy rooms, spaces that don't match the photos," says Mehrotra, who leads growth and marketing. "We built Space Penguin because professionals deserve to know exactly what they're walking into, whether that's for two hours or two months."

Trust as the Starting Point

Space Penguin operates an on-demand workspace booking marketplace. It lets people book desks, private offices, and meeting rooms instantly, in the same effortless way they would book an Airbnb or an Uber. The difference is what the platform measures before a listing goes live.

Most competitors solve for availability. They show you a desk exists nearby and let you book it. Deskpass offers pay-as-you-go access across a wide network, yet little sense of what you are walking into. Hotdesk covers more than forty-five countries with frictionless booking, but the same blind spot on Wi-Fi, noise, and comfort. OfficeHub functions more as a directory you enquire through. GetCroissant runs a subscription model strong in the United States and Europe, yet barely present in Australia.

Each of these platforms treats the booking as the finish line. Space Penguin treats it as the starting point. The qualitative signals that decide whether your time at a desk goes well, such as Wi-Fi reliability, noise levels, and comfort, are built into how every space is vetted and listed. Booking two hours or two months becomes a known quantity rather than a roll of the dice.

"Every space on Space Penguin is judged the same way a good host judges their own home: would I actually want to work here?" says Alisha Aneja, who leads product and technology. "That's the bar competitors aren't setting."

More Than a Marketplace

Space Penguin does not stop at bookings. The company pairs its marketplace with a virtual address, backed by physical locations in Sydney and Melbourne. The same person who uses the platform to find a desk for the afternoon can also run their registered business address through it.

No other company in this category offers both under one roof. That means Space Penguin builds trust with the same customer across more than one part of their business at once. It is a deliberate design choice, and it reflects the founders' belief that "work from anywhere" was sold as freedom without the infrastructure of trust that freedom actually requires.

The founders bring the range needed to build both sides. Mehrotra carries more than twenty years of ad tech experience across the Asia-Pacific region. He previously founded Transcending Monkeys and holds an MBA from the University of Wollongong. Aneja's background spans CommBank, CSIRO, and EMBL-EBI Cambridge, grounding the product in serious technical rigor.

A Fast Start

Since launching in late 2025, Space Penguin has grown to more than 1,000 paying customers across multiple countries. The company recently partnered with workspace operator Workspace365 to expand its footprint across Sydney and Queensland, and it now lists spaces across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra.

The momentum drew notice. Space Penguin was named to the University of Melbourne's 2026 Melbourne Accelerator Program cohort, one of Australia's longest-running university-affiliated startup accelerators. The company is also fielding a growing number of conversations with early-stage investors as it scales.

"Being selected for MAP isn't just a badge," Mehrotra says. "It's the University of Melbourne looking at what we've built and telling us the scale we're capable of reaching. It's fuel to go after this gap in the market even harder."

With headquarters presence in Melbourne's CBD and Sydney's Ultimo, the team operates close to the market it serves. That local grounding shapes everything from the city guides on the platform to the support offered to both space seekers and space owners.

Why It Matters

The larger story here is not really about one startup. It is about a promise that was made and never fully kept. Millions of professionals were told they could work from anywhere. They were not given a reliable way to trust the places they would work.

Space Penguin closes that gap by treating trust as the product, not an afterthought. The tagline, "Your World Office," captures the ambition: freeing modern workers from the stress of unpredictable workspaces so they can stay focused and creative wherever life takes them. In a market this large and this young, the company believes the opportunity is still wide open.

For location-independent professionals, the value is immediate. You spend less time gambling on spaces and more time doing the work that matters. You gain a workspace you can book with confidence and a business address you can rely on, both from the same trusted source.
