Jessica Brenner Finds a New Creative Voice in Neverland

After years of helping students express their ideas, Jessica Brenner turns a lingering question about Tinker Bell into a new fantasy novel.

One quiet moment during a family reading changed the direction of Jessica Brenner’s writing. While revisiting Peter Pan with her children, she reached the part where Peter returns to Wendy and says he no longer remembers Tinker Bell.

The detail stayed with her. For a writer and college admissions counselor who had spent years helping students identify what they wanted to say, it raised a question she wanted to explore through fiction.

That question became Pixie Dust and Other Dangerous Things, a forthcoming fantasy novel from Journey Institute Press. The publisher announced in December 2025 that it had acquired the book’s World English rights and planned to publish it in fall 2026.

How a Familiar Story Opened a New Door

Brenner began with a simple mystery. What happened between Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, and why would someone so important to his adventures disappear from his memory?

In her retelling, Tinker Bell moves from the edge of the story to its center. The publisher describes her as the hidden architect of Neverland and presents the story through her sharp and observant voice. The novel examines eternal youth, loyalty, memory, and the consequences of allowing one person’s version of events to define everyone else.

The project offered Brenner an opportunity to revisit a familiar world without merely repeating it. Rather than treating Tinker Bell as a character defined by jealousy, the novel considers what she may have known, built, protected, or lost.

Peter remains recognizable, but the shift in perspective encourages readers to look more closely at the power behind his charm.

A Writing Life Built Around Other People’s Stories

Brenner’s move into fiction followed years of work focused on students and their personal writing. As a college admissions counselor, she has helped young people strengthen their essays, clarify their goals, and communicate experiences that may initially feel difficult to explain.

Her first published book, College Admission Essays for Dummies, brought that work to a broader audience. Wiley released the second edition in 2021. The book guides students through the process of developing personal essays for college applications while reducing some of the uncertainty surrounding the task.

That professional experience shaped Brenner’s approach to storytelling. College essays often begin under pressure. Students may feel expected to sound impressive, polished, or unusually accomplished.

A counselor’s role is not to manufacture a personality for the page, but to help the writer recognize the experiences and observations that already carry meaning.

Brenner brought a similar principle to her own creative work. Tinker Bell’s voice needed to sound distinct, purposeful, and emotionally grounded. The story also needed to remain accessible to younger readers while offering enough depth for adults familiar with Peter Pan.

Writing Alongside Work and Family

Developing the novel required Brenner to make room for fiction while working with teenagers and raising three children. Her family also became part of the creative environment surrounding the story. Humor, pacing, and character moments could be considered through the reactions of young readers close to the intended audience.

That environment connected the book’s beginning to its development. The idea emerged while Brenner was reading with her children, and the manuscript continued to grow alongside family life.

What started as a question about a forgotten character became a longer exploration of who is remembered, who is believed, and who gets to tell the story.

The novel began receiving recognition before publication. The Children’s Book International Awards named Pixie Dust and Other Dangerous Things the winner of its Fairy Tale category and listed it as a finalist in the Fantasy category. Both listings identify Journey Institute Press and a fall 2026 publication window.

Finding Her Own Place on the Page

Brenner’s career has centered on helping others express themselves clearly. Through Jessica Brenner Educational Consulting, she has worked with students as they develop personal essays, clarify their goals, and communicate their experiences with greater confidence.

Brenner did not leave her earlier work behind when she began writing fantasy. She carried its lessons with her, including the value of listening carefully, questioning easy assumptions, and finding the voice beneath expectation.

Pixie Dust and Other Dangerous Things is scheduled for release on August 30, 2026. Readers can preorder the novel through Jessica Brenner’s author website, or via Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or their local bookseller.
