At a time when debates around immigration often dominate headlines, journalist and media producer Natalia Ghilascu is shifting the narrative, focusing not on division, but on contribution, resilience, and impact. From her base in Chicago, Ghilascu, founder of HORA in America, is launching “Making Waves,” a new digital series designed to amplify immigrant voices that are shaping industries, strengthening communities, and redefining the American story.
The series arrives amid a rapidly evolving media landscape where nuanced immigrant stories are often overshadowed by political rhetoric. “Making Waves” seeks to fill that gap, offering in-depth, human-centered storytelling that highlights both the challenges and achievements of diaspora communities across the United States.
For Ghilascu, the project is deeply personal. Born in the Republic of Moldova, she has built an internationally recognized career spanning investigative journalism, documentary filmmaking, and television production. Her work has consistently focused on human rights, migration, and underreported social issues, earning her accolades including a United Nations media award for her reporting on human rights violations in Eastern Europe.
“Immigrants are not just part of America’s story, they are actively shaping its future,” Ghilascu said. “This series is about giving those voices the platform they deserve.”
A Different Kind of Immigrant Story

Natalia Ghilascu and Stefania Magidson, founder of Blue Heron Foundation, recently awarded for Compassion and Social Impact at Women of Influence Gala in Chicago.
Unlike traditional interview formats, “Making Waves” centers on the lived experiences behind success, exploring the risks, setbacks, and determination that define immigrant journeys. Each episode features leaders and changemakers from across sectors, including business, law, culture, and philanthropy, offering a broader and more complex portrait of immigrant life in America.
One of the first episodes features Dana Bucin, Honorary Consul of Romania in Connecticut and a top-ranked immigration attorney, who addresses the growing challenges facing Romanian and Moldovan communities. As U.S. immigration policies become more restrictive, Bucin outlines the increasing difficulty of obtaining green cards and the broader legal and economic consequences for families navigating the system.
Another episode spotlights the inaugural “Women of Influence” Gala in Chicago, organized by the Romanian-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event celebrates women in the Romanian diaspora who are driving impact across borders. Among them is Stefania Magidson, a Los Angeles-based philanthropist who has raised over time $3.5 million through the Blue Heron Foundation to support thousands of vulnerable children in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, offering them not only material support but also access to education, dignity, and a brighter future.
In recognition of her tireless dedication, she was honored with the Merit Award for Compassion and Social Impact at the Women of Influence Gala in Chicago—a distinction that reflects her ability to inspire an entire community. Her presence at “Making Waves” brings forward not just a success story, but a powerful lesson on how compassion can shape destinies—embodying the voice of a woman who proves that true influence is measured not in titles, but in the lives you touch and the hope you leave behind.
From Investigative Reporting to Global Storytelling
Ghilascu’s strength as a storyteller lies in her ability to merge investigative rigor with emotional depth. She began her career covering social justice, minority rights, and systemic discrimination across Eastern Europe, building a reputation for fearless reporting and ethical integrity.
Her transition into documentary filmmaking expanded her global reach.
Her film “The Exile from Bessarabia,” which examines the deportation of Roma communities during World War II, has received international recognition, including top honors at the Cronograf International Film Festival and a Merit Award at the 2026 Documentaries Without Borders International Film Festival. The film reflects her commitment to preserving historical memory while confronting difficult truths.
In the United States, Ghilascu has continued to build platforms that elevate diaspora voices. Through her work with Arca TV, she produced “Dor de Moldova,” a series exploring the lives of Moldovan immigrants, while her media initiatives, including Moldova Times and HORA in America, have become hubs for cultural storytelling and community connection.

Building a Platform for Impact
“Making Waves” builds on that foundation but expands its scope beyond a single community. While rooted in the Romanian and Moldovan diaspora, the series aims to reflect the broader diversity of immigrant experiences across America. At its core, the project is built on three pillars: storytelling, representation, and impact.
Ghilascu’s reporting style, shaped by years of investigative work, brings depth and credibility to each conversation, while her cross-cultural perspective allows her to frame individual stories within larger global and political contexts. The goal is not only to inform, but to connect.
By highlighting immigrant contributions across industries, the series aims to foster dialogue, challenge stereotypes, and inspire collaboration between communities.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond its immediate audience, “Making Waves” is also designed to resonate with younger generations navigating their own multicultural identities. “Representation matters,” Ghilascu said. “When people see stories that reflect their experiences, it creates confidence and a sense of possibility.”
Looking Ahead
As the first episodes roll out, Ghilascu is already planning future seasons that will expand the series’ reach, featuring voices from technology, public service, the arts, and beyond. Her long-term vision is ambitious: to create a living archive of immigrant contributions in America at a time when those stories are more important than ever.
In a media environment often driven by speed and polarization, “Making Waves” offers something different, a space for depth, nuance, and human connection. For Ghilascu, that mission has defined her career. And with this new series, she is bringing it to a broader audience, one story at a time.
