In the ever-evolving world of auctions, the name Nathan Howerton is quickly becoming synonymous with fresh perspectives, diversity, and a passion for preserving history. As the new Consignment/Projects Director at Heritage Auctions, Howerton is shaking up the industry with a unique approach that combines a deep respect for tradition with a forward-thinking vision that embraces the digital future.

Howerton’s rise to prominence in the auction world is no accident. With a background as an entrepreneur and marketer, he brings an innovative flair to the industry, where much of the work has historically been guided by established practices and traditions. His ability to blend these worlds is what sets him apart, and it’s exactly what Heritage Auctions needed to align with his mission: to educate, preserve, and honor the treasures they sell.

“I’ve always believed that there is an untapped richness in the stories behind every item,” Howerton explains. “Too many creators go unnoticed, and far too many underappreciated treasures have yet to be discovered by the broader public. This is where my passion lies bringing these treasures, and the stories behind them, into the spotlight.”

A perfect example of how these untold stories are being valued today is the recent record-breaking sale of a Superman #1 comic book in CGC 9.0 condition. The sale, which shattered previous records, perfectly illustrates Howerton’s belief in the growing value of handmade treasures. “In an increasingly digital world, the tangible treasures of the past only become more valuable,” he says. “There’s something irreplaceable about owning a piece of history whether it’s an iconic comic book or a rare artifact that digital creations can’t replicate.”

Howerton is not just about sales; he is deeply committed to a community-first approach, ensuring that the auction world is inclusive, welcoming, and diverse. “Being one of the few African Americans in the auction industry, I feel a strong responsibility to show that the industry can and should be more representative of all communities,” he says. “It’s important for me to bring more diverse voices to the table, ensuring that everyone has a chance to have their stories told and their treasures valued.”

For Howerton, this is more than just a professional journey; it’s a personal mission. “There are so many creators past and present whose work has been overlooked, undervalued, or forgotten. My goal is to shine a light on them and give them the respect they deserve,” he shares.

The decision to join Heritage Auctions was an easy one for Howerton, who believes the company shares his values of respect, integrity, and knowledge. “Heritage Auctions was the perfect fit for me. They treat everyone with care and respect, and the team is truly some of the most knowledgeable people in the world,” he explains. “Their commitment to preserving and educating about the treasures they sell aligns perfectly with my mission.”

Howerton’s journey has not been without its challenges, but his background in entrepreneurship has taught him to approach obstacles with a strategic mindset. “Being an entrepreneur has given me the confidence to approach the auction world differently,” he says. “The market is changing, and it’s important to adapt and grow with it. But it’s also important to stay grounded in the values of respect and care for the items and the people who trust us to handle them.”

At Heritage Auctions, Howerton is already making an impact, bringing new energy and fresh ideas to the organization. His background in marketing and entrepreneurship has led him to explore new ways of connecting with collectors, consignors, and institutions through modern digital strategies. “The auction world can be a bit old-fashioned at times,” he says. “But I see it as my job to bring it into the modern age, creating more opportunities for engagement and making the auction experience more accessible and inclusive.”

As a community advocate, Howerton's approach goes beyond business. He’s committed to creating a space where all voices are heard, and diverse creators are celebrated. He believes the future of auctions is bright, especially as the younger generation continues to embrace the value of tangible collectibles. “The future of auctions is about community whether that’s through digital platforms, social media engagement, or in-person experiences. We have to meet people where they are and celebrate the treasures they value,” he says.
