Nicholas Burns: From U.S. Navy Submariner to Tech Leader

A journey of transformation, overcoming challenges, and embracing sustainability and work-life balance.

Jul 20, 2025

Nicholas Burns is the kind of person who views life through experiences rather than milestones. An American who began his career as a U.S. Navy submariner, Nicholas’ path has taken him across continents, from Tesla’s high-tech world to the cutting-edge semiconductor industry with KLA Corporation. Today, after settling in Singapore with his wife and becoming a Permanent Resident, Nicholas embraces his new life in this vibrant city-state, where work-life balance, sustainability, and leadership define success on his terms.

Nicholas Burns never imagined a life in technology or abroad. His first major leap was into the U.S. Navy, where he served as a nuclear electronics technician on the USS Bremerton stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. For six years, Nicholas honed a meticulous attention to detail that would shape the rest of his career. “In the Navy, there is no room for error when you’re working with nuclear reactors,” he recalls. This emphasis on precision became one of his most valuable skills, serving him well in his civilian roles later on.

After his Navy career, Nicholas ventured into the corporate world. His first significant role outside the military was at Tesla, where his ambition and desire to make an impact drove him to the semiconductor industry. Working at KLA Corporation, a global leader in semiconductor equipment, provided him with an entirely new set of challenges, pushing his leadership abilities and technical expertise to their limits.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Early in his career, Nicholas made some pivotal decisions, such as leaving Tesla after just six months. He realized that while the company’s groundbreaking innovations in electric vehicles were impressive, the level of satisfaction from his role was not fulfilling. He longed for complex challenges that matched his technical skills, and the simplicity of problem-solving at Tesla was not enough for him. This led him to KLA, where he now thrives in a role that requires frequent travel and the tackling of complex, high-stakes problems in the semiconductor world.

Relocating to Singapore in 2020 marked the beginning of a new chapter for Nicholas. Despite the logistical and emotional challenges of moving abroad, Singapore became his home. “It was not just about work; it was about creating a life I could envision for myself long term,” he says. After securing Permanent Residency, Nicholas and his wife invested in an HDB flat, making it clear that Singapore would be his forever home.

One of the defining moments in Nicholas’ career was his realization toward the end of his time in the Navy that leadership meant more than executing tasks, it meant teaching others. “I had always preferred doing complex jobs myself rather than training junior sailors,” he shares. But with time, he learned that leadership is about empowering others. This shift in perspective not only made him a better mentor but also helped him understand the true power of delegation and trust. This transformation paved the way for his future success in leadership roles, where he now manages a team of engineers at KLA Corporation.

In addition to his professional achievements, Nicholas is deeply committed to social responsibility. In Singapore, he volunteers with the National Parks Board, planting trees to help preserve the environment, and also mentors special education students at the Metta School by offering mock interviews. These experiences reflect his belief in the importance of making a positive impact, both professionally and personally.

What sets Nicholas apart today is not just his technical proficiency or leadership ability, but his holistic approach to success. He sees work-life balance as an essential component of a fulfilling life. Nicholas advocates for a clear separation between work and personal time, using a dedicated work phone to ensure he can truly switch off at the end of the day. “If you choose to look at work outside of office hours, do so with intention,” he advises. His strong belief in maintaining a healthy balance between work, family, and personal time is a cornerstone of his leadership philosophy.

He also values flexibility and sustainability. The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped many workers’ attitudes toward the traditional 9-to-5 office culture. Nicholas exemplifies this new way of working by utilizing hybrid work schedules, taking advantage of early meetings from home before commuting to the office. This allows him to manage his time efficiently and minimize unnecessary stress, all while contributing positively to the environment by reducing his commute.

At the core of Nicholas’ journey is a deep understanding of what makes people thrive in their careers. His focus on work satisfaction and mental health as essential elements of success offers a refreshing perspective in a world that often prioritizes financial achievement above all else. He firmly believes that success cannot be measured by job titles alone, but by the joy and fulfillment one derives from their work.

Nicholas’ story is not just about professional accomplishments, but about personal growth and transformation. His decision to leave his home country for Singapore and his subsequent integration into a new culture reflect his desire to build a meaningful, balanced life that aligns with his values. He hopes his journey will inspire others to pursue success in a way that is sustainable, impactful, and aligned with their personal values.

Nicholas’ journey is a testament to the power of embracing change, taking risks, and redefining success on one’s own terms.
