A New Chapter at 68: Eileen Proctor's Plot Twist

Eileen Proctor never imagined she would step into the role of children’s book author. Yet, at age 68, that’s exactly what happened when she was inspired to share life-enriching lessons featuring her adopted dog, Phoebe. What began as a single story has blossomed into The Adventures of Phoebe The Wagamuffin, an expanding series that provides children with powerful messages of love, empathy and positivity from a pup’s-eye view.

The Inspiration Behind Phoebe's Stories

Eileen’s life has always revolved around her love of animals, particularly dogs, as well as a passion for creative storytelling. Upon adopting a tiny Shih-Tzu mix named Phoebe in 2024, she became captivated by the pup’s consistently joyful, serene, confident and resilient personality. That’s when the proverbial lightbulb turned on. With an adorable new doggy daughter serving as her muse, Eileen embarked on a quest to channel her passions and talents by writing a book that would share and instill Phoebe’s admirable traits to children. 

What Sets Phoebe The Wagamuffin Apart

Phoebe The Wagamuffin stories gently introduce and reinforce affirmative character traits that children can learn, embrace and demonstrate throughout their lives, even in the face of extreme challenges. Proctor believes that lessons delivered through Phoebe’s unique pup’s-eye view --- brought to life with vibrant illustrations and endearing, relatable characters --- will resonate more deeply with children than if delivered by adults alone.

The late-in-life author’s goal is more than just filling bookshelves. Through her writing, she aspires to build an affirmative movement for the next generation. “There’s no doubt that consistent exposure to uplifting messages starting at a very young age will help children flourish into the best versions of themselves,” she explains. “And that’s exactly what Phoebe and I are intent on doing.”

Phoebe’s Rapid Success

The first book in the series, Phoebe’s Best Day Ever, quickly captured the hearts of Pre-K to second grade readers and their families. Its success sparked a second series for even younger children, Phoebe The Pup Learning Books. What began as one story has already grown into eight, with more on the horizon.

A Heartfelt Commitment to Animals

Eileen’s mission and impact go beyond the messages within the books. In support of her heartfelt belief that “adoption is the best option” and that every animal deserves a second chance, she is committed to donating a portion of all sales to animal rescue organizations to help more animals find their forever homes.

Building a Legacy of Love, Kindness, and Possibility

Eileen’s new path is a testament to the power of reinvention and proof that it’s never too late to follow one’s passions. In addition to helping children navigate life with enduring life skills, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their own dreams no matter their age or stage of life.

When she isn’t writing, Eileen provides business counseling through a North Carolina statewide program, helping entrepreneurs turn their dreams into reality. She currently lives in the suburbs of Raleigh, NC with her family of four adopted fur kids.
