As Dr. Ken Kwong-Kay Wong recovered from surgery alone in a hospital room, one question stayed with him long after the procedure ended. What happens to older adults who experience that same feeling of isolation every single day? That deeply personal moment became the foundation for Presentria.ai, a Canadian startup focused on one of the country's fastest growing social challenges. Rather than asking seniors to learn new technology, Presentria.ai meets them where they already are, through the telephone.
Canada is experiencing one of the most significant demographic shifts in its history. The number of Canadians aged 65 and older continues to rise rapidly and is expected to grow substantially over the coming decades, creating increasing demand for healthcare, community support, and caregiver resources. At the same time, social isolation has become an important public health concern, with many older adults reporting feelings of loneliness that can affect both physical and emotional well-being. These trends highlight the need for practical, accessible solutions that help older adults remain connected while supporting families and care providers.
A Voice-First Approach Built Around Seniors
Presentria.ai was designed from the beginning for older adults who may never download an app, create an online account, or feel comfortable navigating modern digital interfaces. Instead of requiring a smartphone or new hardware, seniors simply answer a regular phone call or place one themselves.
The AI companion can conduct daily wellness conversations, provide medication and hydration reminders, remember personal stories across conversations, and communicate in multiple languages including English, French, Cantonese, Italian, and Punjabi, with additional languages planned. When appropriate, the system can notify caregivers through SMS and e-mail if a conversation suggests a potential concern.
"Our goal is not to replace family, friends, or healthcare professionals," says Dr. Wong. "We want to provide compassionate, accessible companionship that fits naturally into a senior's daily life while helping caregivers stay informed."

This voice-first design also addresses an important accessibility challenge. Many existing AI platforms were created as general purpose assistants for technology confident users. They often assume users are comfortable with smartphones, visual interfaces, passwords, and complex menus. Presentria.ai instead focuses on conversational simplicity, multilingual communication, and carefully designed interaction boundaries intended for older adults.
A Mission Rooted in Personal Experience
Dr. Wong brings more than two decades of experience in higher education to the project. He is a full-time marketing professor at Seneca Polytechnic and has previously taught at the University of Toronto and Toronto Metropolitan University. In 2020, he received the Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities' Award of Excellence for his dedication to students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Outside the classroom, he has spent nights and weekends independently designing and building Presentria.ai from his dining room table while continuing his full time teaching responsibilities.
As a first-generation immigrant from Hong Kong, Dr. Wong understands the importance of language and cultural familiarity. Many immigrant seniors prefer speaking their mother tongue, particularly as they age. Yet many digital health services primarily support English or French, creating barriers for multicultural communities across Canada.
Presentria.ai places multilingual communication at the center of its design rather than treating it as an optional feature. The goal is to ensure that a Cantonese speaking senior in Scarborough, a Punjabi speaking grandparent in Brampton, or an Italian speaking older adult in Woodbridge can experience meaningful conversations in the language that feels most natural.
A Canadian Innovation with a Human Focus

Unlike many consumer AI products, Presentria.ai is being developed specifically for older adults and their support networks. The platform is designed to provide companionship while encouraging appropriate conversational boundaries. It is intended to complement existing healthcare and family support systems rather than replace them.
One feature that distinguishes Presentria.ai is its proactive outreach model. Instead of waiting for seniors to initiate contact, the system can place scheduled daily calls, similar to the way a caring family member might regularly check in. This approach may be particularly valuable for older adults with limited digital literacy or those who benefit from consistent routines.
The company plans to work with long-term care homes, community health centres, municipal aging programs, pharmacies, and telecommunications providers while also offering direct access for families who wish to enroll a loved one.
Entering the Next Stage of Development
Presentria.ai has progressed beyond the idea stage into a functional working prototype developed entirely through self-funding. Dr. Wong is now seeking collaborations with researchers, healthcare organizations, caregivers, seniors, and community partners to gather real-world feedback across multiple languages and cultural communities.
The company is also pursuing grants, strategic partnerships, pilot programs, and pre-seed investment to accelerate development and prepare for broader deployment across Canada.
For Dr. Wong, however, the mission extends beyond technology.
"This is my last major project before retirement," he says. "I am building Presentria because the problem matters. Every older adult deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued in the language that feels like home."
As Canada prepares for an aging population, innovations that combine accessibility, cultural inclusion, and thoughtful AI design may become increasingly important. Presentria.ai represents one Canadian effort to ensure that technology serves people who have too often been overlooked by digital innovation.
