Preserving Island Heritage Through the Power of History
Keila Thompson preserves Bay Islands history, ancestry, and culture through books that connect past stories with future generations.
What happens when the stories of a community are left untold? Family names can become disconnected from their origins, traditions can fade, and generations can inherit a place without fully knowing the people and experiences that shaped it. Preserving history is therefore more than looking back. It is an investment in identity, cultural continuity, and the generations still to come.
For author and historian Keila Rochelle Thompson Gough, that commitment became the foundation for Piece of the Puzzle: The History of My Ancestors on the Bay Islands, a historical and genealogical work dedicated to documenting the people, families, migrations, traditions, and experiences that helped shape the Bay Islands of Honduras.
What began in 2004 as a personal effort to trace her family ancestry gradually developed into an extensive historical project. As Thompson uncovered records and stories about her ancestors, she recognized that their experiences represented more than her own family history. They were connected to the broader story of the Bay Islands and its distinctive cultural heritage.
The title Piece of the Puzzle reflects the way history is often discovered. A photograph, a family document, an old record, or an oral account may reveal only one small part of the past. Sharing Island History Beyond the Bay Islands
That mission reached an important audience in September 2026 when Thompson presented Piece of the Puzzle at the Fifth International Book Fair of Honduras in Tegucigalpa.
The event, held at the Museum for National Identity (MIN), brought together authors, readers, cultural representatives, publishers, artists, and literary enthusiasts from Honduras and abroad. The 2026 edition was organized as part of a broader national effort to bring literature and cultural expression closer to the public and to encourage reading throughout Honduras. The country's Secretariat of the Cultures, Arts and Heritage of the Peoples of Honduras (SECAPPH), through its General Directorate of Books and Documents, has made the promotion of reading, access to books, and the strengthening of public libraries important components of its cultural work.
The fair represented part of a wider national effort to place books, writers, history, and cultural knowledge within greater reach of Honduran communities. SECAPPH has reported the development of a National Network of Public Libraries and initiatives intended to expand access to literature and strengthen the role of books and historical memory in communities throughout the country.
Within this larger initiative, the government's efforts to increase the distribution of books to libraries across Honduras underscore an important principle: access to books is access to knowledge, and access to knowledge is essential to preserving a nation's cultural memory. The broader book-distribution initiative, including the goal of placing thousands of books in libraries throughout the country, reflects an effort to ensure that reading is not limited to major urban centers but reaches communities across Honduras.
For Thompson, the opportunity to present the history of the Bay Islands within this national literary and cultural setting represented an important step in bringing these stories to a wider public.
It also created an especially meaningful connection between her work and the broader mission of the fair. Piece of the Puzzle is, after all, a book about preserving stories that might otherwise disappear—and the International Book Fair provided a space where those stories could be shared with new generations of readers.
The experience also highlighted the extraordinary cultural diversity that forms part of Honduras’s rich national heritage. During the presentations, representatives of diverse cultural communities—including the Lenca, Pech, Tawahka, Garifuna, Spanish, English-speaking Afro-Caribbean communities, and White Islanders of British descent—came together to engage in meaningful conversations about literature, history, identity, and the preservation of cultural heritage. The presence of writers documenting the histories and cultures of their own communities also demonstrated the important role literature can play in cultural preservation. Books become vessels for memory, allowing stories to travel beyond the generation in which they were first told and giving future readers an opportunity to encounter the experiences of those who came before them.
This is precisely why preserving the history of the Bay Islands matters—not only for islanders, but for Honduras as a whole. The history of the Bay Islands is part of the history of Honduras. By documenting it, sharing it, and making it accessible to readers, these stories become part of the country's enduring cultural record.
In that environment, the central message of Piece of the Puzzle became even more relevant: different communities may have distinct histories, but each history contributes to the larger story of a nation.

Inspiring the Next Generation
The commitment to preserving Bay Islands heritage continues through Thompson’s children's literature as well. Her children's story and activity book, Samuel's Island Adventure, co-written and co-illustrated with her son, Knox A. Bodden Thompson, introduces younger readers to island history and heritage through storytelling, adventure, and educational activities.
More children's books inspired by the history, culture, traditions, and natural heritage of the Bay Islands are also currently in development, with additional titles expected to be released in the coming months.
These projects share a common purpose: making the history and heritage of the islands accessible to a new generation.
A Legacy for the Future
Piece of the Puzzle began with one family's search for its roots, but its purpose has grown into something much larger—the preservation of a piece of Bay Islands history for generations to come.
History survives when it is documented, shared, and valued.
Every family story, photograph, record, and tradition represents another piece of the larger picture. By preserving those pieces today, we give future generations the opportunity to understand where they came from and appreciate the heritage that helped shape who they are.
