In Garner, North Carolina, Redfield Martial Arts has established a steady presence grounded in tradition, discipline, and consistency. For students who step onto the mat, the experience is less about quick transformation and more about gradual, measurable progress built through structured training.
At the center of the school is Owner and Head Master Bernard Redfield, whose decades-long involvement in martial arts continues to shape both the curriculum and the learning environment.
A Foundation Rooted in Tradition
Master Redfield began his martial arts journey in the 1970s, training in Samurai Judo under Sensei Vincent Ursone in Stamford, Connecticut. This early exposure introduced principles that remain central to the school today, including discipline, respect, and technical precision.
In the years that followed, he expanded his training into Tang Soo Do under Master Joseph Devita while studying at the Propersi Institute of Art, where he graduated with honors. Continued instruction under Master John McGuiness then advanced training under TSDMGK founder GM Charles Ferraro, currently ranked 7th Degree Black Belt through the American Tang Soo Do Federation. He also pursued Hapkido, earning senior 5th Degree Black Belt rank through the World Traditional Hapkido Federation, under GM Arthur St Armand.
Over time, his training extended into additional systems such as Judo, Jujitsu, and Kali, along with broader self-defense practices. These combined experiences contributed to a more comprehensive understanding of martial arts beyond a single discipline.
Evolving Into a Comprehensive System
After many years of involvement with Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan, including Regional Director, Master Redfield transitioned in 2018 to focus on developing a program that reflected the full scope of his training.
This effort led to the formation of the Red Dragon School of Tang Soo Do and Hapkido.
The curriculum emphasizes a balance between traditional martial arts structure and practical application. Students are introduced to a range of techniques, including striking, joint manipulation, takedowns, and controlled ground defense, along with situational awareness.
The goal is to provide a well-rounded training experience that reflects both the historical roots of martial arts and the realities of modern self-defense.
Experience That Informs Instruction
Throughout his martial arts career, Master Redfield has participated in training and competitive events across the United States and internationally. These experiences continue to influence how techniques are taught, particularly in terms of control, timing, and application.

While competition is not the primary focus for every student, the training environment reflects an understanding of how martial arts function beyond controlled practice settings.
Students are encouraged to approach training with patience and consistency, allowing skills to develop over time rather than through accelerated progression.
A Focus on Structured Learning
Redfield Martial Arts maintains a structured approach to instruction, with an emphasis on individual development within a group setting. Class sizes are managed to allow for focused guidance, and advancement is based on demonstrated proficiency.
This approach supports students who prefer a steady and disciplined learning process. The program serves individuals aged 12 through adult, with instruction designed to remain accessible while maintaining clear expectations.
A Consistent Presence in the Community
Since opening in 2006, Redfield Martial Arts has remained part of the Garner community, offering an environment centered on respect, accountability, and continued learning.
The school provides an alternative to more commercially driven training models by maintaining a focus on long-term development rather than rapid advancement. This consistency has contributed to its longevity and continued presence in the area.
Training With Practical Context
A key component of the program is its focus on application. Students are not only introduced to techniques but also to the context in which they may be used.
Training includes striking fundamentals, self-defense scenarios, joint locks, takedowns, and awareness-based drills. This integrated approach allows students to build both technical ability and a broader understanding of personal preparedness.
Over time, students often develop improved coordination, discipline, and confidence through consistent practice.

A Measured Approach to Progress
For individuals exploring martial arts as an ongoing practice, Redfield Martial Arts offers a structured and experience-based path. Its integration of Tang Soo Do and Hapkido reflects a commitment to preserving tradition while adapting to contemporary training needs.
