FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Marist College and Guzangs Present "Alternative Realities: African Fashion Exhibit" Nationwide - September 4, 2024 (USANews.com) - Marist College and Guzangs, a leading platform for African art and fashion, are proud to announce the opening of the exhibit “Alternative Realities: Modern and Contemporary African Fashion, a View from the Continent” at Marist College’s Steel Plant. Running from September 12 to November 15, the exhibit showcases the innovation and diversity of African fashion, featuring 14 acclaimed designers and highlighting unique textiles and sustainable practices. Directed by Sonia Roy, Marist Fashion gallery director and lecturer, the exhibit aims to challenge traditional perspectives on African fashion, address limitations, and showcase diverse viewpoints in alignment with Guzangs’ mission. “We are excited to offer the Marist community and beyond a firsthand look at the dynamic landscape of African fashion, providing valuable insights for students entering the international fashion market,” said Roy. Jacqueline Reich, Dean of Marist’s School of Communication and the Arts, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to host this unique opportunity to engage with global perspectives. The exhibit exemplifies Marist’s dedication to promoting a deeper understanding of art and fashion across cultures.” Featuring a range of styles including recycled fashions, reappropriated prints, and tech-integrated designs, the exhibit offers an immersive experience with interactive displays, sounds, and music that provide insight into the evolving narratives of African fashion. Guzangs founder Idelle Taye has curated the exhibition to showcase the diverse talent of African designers and challenge the monolithic view often associated with African fashion. “Partnering with Marist College, a leader in fashion education, is a testament to the growing recognition of African fashion on a global scale,” said Taye. “We are committed to highlighting the depth and variety of African fashion, fostering dialogue and understanding of its cultural and societal impact.” Co-curated by Taye and Kelechi Odu, a Nigerian artist, architect, and menswear designer, the vibrant exhibition aims to elevate African fashion on a global scale.
