In 2025, the Cyprus Cricket Federation (CCF) made a bold move that would forever change the sporting landscape of the island: they implemented a nationwide primary school activation strategy through the International Cricket Council's (ICC) CRIIIO program. In just one year, the program reached approximately one-third of primary-aged children in Cyprus, effectively bringing the sport of cricket to the masses. This initiative, which saw the introduction of structured cricket in nearly 100 schools, was not only an unprecedented success but also a testament to what careful planning, resource management, and community collaboration can accomplish.

These coaches not only delivered high-quality training but also provided guidance on how to establish a sustainable coaching framework.
However, the CCF knew that relying on external coaches was not a long-term solution. As a result, the organization worked closely with the ICC Europe network to implement the ICC Coach Education program. This initiative trained local coaches who would eventually take over from the visiting experts, ensuring a self-sufficient cricketing ecosystem for the future.
Developing the Right Curriculum for Cyprus
Cricket was not part of the traditional educational system in Cyprus, so the Federation faced the challenge of integrating it into the school curriculum. This involved creating a curriculum that was not only effective but also culturally relevant. The solution came in the form of a localized CRIIIO curriculum, developed in collaboration with ICC-approved vendor Dynamic Business.
The curriculum, which was translated into Greek to ensure accessibility, was designed to align with Cyprus' education framework. This careful tailoring made the program both culturally appropriate and academically sound, giving it the best chance of success.
The curriculum rollout was a success. By the start of 2025, the resources were ready to be deployed, and nearly 100 schools across Cyprus began teaching cricket as part of their physical education program. It was a historic moment that marked the beginning of a cricket revolution on the island.
A Clear Sustainability Roadmap
The CCF's vision for cricket in Cyprus extended well beyond just getting kids to play the game. The federation developed a three-phase roadmap for the long-term growth of the sport in the country.
Phase One: This phase focused on launching a national access platform to facilitate widespread participation in cricket across Cyprus. By working with schools, the Federation was able to introduce cricket to children from all backgrounds, ensuring that no one was left out.
Phase Two: This phase aimed to expand and retain participation. Through targeted engagement and additional resources for schools, the CCF sought to keep kids engaged with the sport and create a culture of cricket within the schools.
Phase Three: In the final phase, the CCF aimed to consolidate its efforts by integrating competition structures into the existing framework. This would provide children with opportunities to showcase their skills and encourage a sense of healthy competition.
Diversified Funding Ensures Program Viability
No ambitious program can succeed without adequate funding. Fortunately, the Cyprus Cricket Federation was able to secure financial support from a diverse range of sources, ensuring that the CRIIIO program could continue to flourish.
Private sponsors played a pivotal role, with contributions from local businesses and the European Cricket Network's Cricket’sCool initiative helping to cover the costs. In addition, the Cyprus Olympic Committee provided valuable support through Olympic Solidarity funding, which enabled the Federation to run an ICC Level 1 Coach Course for teachers and volunteers.
The CCF also tapped into ICC funds to fill any financial gaps, ensuring that the program was not solely reliant on annual member funding. This diversified funding strategy proved to be crucial in keeping the initiative on track and ensuring that it had the resources to continue growing.
Effective Management and Partnerships Drive Success
Effective management was at the heart of the CRIIIO program's success. A small administrative team of just two people coordinated schedules with nearly 100 schools, managed tutors, and handled logistics. This lean approach allowed for maximum efficiency, ensuring that the program was implemented smoothly despite the challenges.
Furthermore, the program’s success was made possible by the support of key government organizations, such as the Cyprus Sports Organization and the Ministry of Education. These partnerships gave the CCF access to public schools, ensuring that the program could reach a wide audience. The Ministry of Education’s endorsement also facilitated the process of introducing cricket to around 40% of the national primary school network.
Breaking Barriers: Gender Equality in Participation
An important goal of the CRIIIO program was to ensure that both boys and girls had equal opportunities to participate in cricket. The Cyprus Cricket Federation achieved a 50–50 gender split in participation, a remarkable achievement that reflects the organization's commitment to inclusivity.
