A Career Built Around Questions
For Dr. Alfred Basta, questions have rarely stayed inside one discipline. His work has moved between cybersecurity, mathematics, higher education, writing, music, and personal reflections on faith and grief.
His professional background includes teaching mathematics, computer science, information technology, and cybersecurity, along with work as a cybersecurity consultant and systems analyst. He has also written technical books and independently published works covering subjects that range from Christian apologetics and grief to fiction and songwriting.
That range is part of what defines his approach to writing. Rather than separating his professional and creative interests, Basta frequently uses ideas from one field to explore questions in another.
From Mathematics to Cybersecurity
Basta began his academic career in mathematics and later developed a focus on computer science and cybersecurity. His published technical work includes books on computer security, penetration testing, database security, Linux administration, mathematics for information technology, cybersecurity law, security operations centers, and mathematics in cybersecurity.
Among his more recent technical publications is Mathematics in Cybersecurity, co-written with Stephan DeLong and Stavros Basta (his son) and published by Wiley in 2026 and Bare-Metal AI: Exploiting Linux Internals for Extreme Data Science co-written with Rebecca Basta (his daughter). Basta was 21 when his father died. According to Basta's account, the experience contributed to a prolonged period of questioning his Christian faith. From 1994 to 2006, he says he deliberately examined arguments against the existence of God, approaching the subject through the analytical habits he had developed through mathematics and cryptography.
He later described that experience in Why I Decided to Believe in God: A Cryptographer's Twelve Year Case Against God, Three Graves, and the Evidence That Would Not Break.
Rather than presenting the journey as a simple conversion story, Basta describes years of uncertainty, research, and reconsideration. The book examines questions involving cosmology, the origin of life, biblical texts, historical evidence, suffering, and the relationship between faith and reason.
His conclusion remains his own interpretation of those questions. Basta describes his eventual return to Christian belief in 2006 as the result of an investigation that changed the position from which he had started.
That emphasis on questioning is also reflected in the reader responses included with his book materials. Several readers highlighted the personal nature of the journey, particularly the way Basta connects intellectual questions with experiences of loss and grief.
Writing Through Loss
Grief became another important part of Basta's writing after the deaths of close family members, including his wife, Nadine Basta.
The couple married in 1997, and Nadine collaborated with him on several technical books. She also served as an early reader of his work. Her death in 2025 became part of the personal context behind several later projects, including A Story of Love and Loss, Grief: A Christian Perspective, and Strong Men Can Cry.
These books approach grief from a Christian perspective while addressing the emotional difficulty of living with loss. Rather than presenting grief as something that can be quickly resolved, Basta's writing explores the continuing tension between sorrow, memory, faith, and hope.
