Erik Sopracasa Builds MOVART Beyond Hollywood
How Erik Sopracasa built MOVART, developed original IP, and brought A Queen’s Runway to Netflix.

An immigrant filmmaker turns years of creative training, business experience, and a lifelong interest in producing into an independent production company with international reach.
The moment Erik Sopracasa realized waiting was no longer a strategy, he was not standing on a red carpet or sitting across from a studio executive. He was looking at an industry built on permission, knowing he had come too far to ask for a place at the table. Erik Sopracasa’s production company, MOVART, began from that tension: an actor, producer, and immigrant founder deciding that the next opportunity would not be granted by Hollywood. It would be built.
Erik Sopracasa: A Story Of Reinvention
Erik Sopracasa’s journey into the American entertainment industry began in 2016, when he moved to the United States to pursue his ambition of studying acting. Born in Pordenone, Italy, and raised in Belgium from the age of ten, Sopracasa developed an international perspective that would later shape his creative career.
He studied at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in Los Angeles before continuing his training at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City, graduating in June 2019. He became the first Belgian actor to graduate from the prestigious institution.
Following his training, Sopracasa worked with The Acting Company, the renowned theater company founded by John Houseman. There, he gained valuable experience in professional theater production and learned from distinguished artists, including director Walter Bobbie and actors Morgan Freeman, Dakin Matthews, and Dana Ivey.
Although acting remained central to his training, the experience helped him discover his passion for producing.
“I’ve been producing my entire life, from organizing small theater events when I was young to producing larger events throughout my corporate career before moving to the United States,” he explains. “Working with The Acting Company and seeing how professional Broadway and Off-Broadway productions came together was fascinating. I realized how much I enjoyed bringing all the pieces together, solving problems, and seeing a vision become a finished production.”
This realization shifted his focus toward developing projects, assembling creative teams, and bringing stories to audiences through film and television. Producing allowed him to combine his organizational experience with his creative ambitions.
Like many aspiring filmmakers, Sopracasa also encountered the structural challenges of the entertainment industry. Access to financing, distribution, and production opportunities often depends on established networks and industry connections. Navigating these barriers became part of his journey toward finding new ways to develop projects and bring his creative visions to life.
From Business Experience to Building MOVART
Sopracasa’s creative career was shaped by his professional background in business. He studied marketing at Karel de Grote University in Antwerp and worked with international companies, including Samsung Electronics and BNP Paribas. His experience in marketing, sales, and project management provided a strong foundation in commercial strategy, communication, and project coordination.
These skills became integral to his work as a producer. Film production requires more than a compelling story; it involves identifying opportunities, building relationships, securing access, coordinating collaborators, managing resources, and developing pathways to distribution.
Recognizing that producing combined his creative interests with professional experience, Sopracasa founded MOVART, an independent production company and creative studio working across film, television, documentaries, and branded content.
As founder, CEO, and executive producer, Sopracasa guides the company’s strategic direction and business development while developing projects and overseeing their progression from concept to production and distribution. His work bridges the creative and commercial sides of filmmaking, emphasizing original intellectual property and partnerships that connect projects with international audiences.
Establishing MOVART allowed Sopracasa to take responsibility for the entire creative process rather than depend solely on traditional industry opportunities. He combined his expertise in marketing, business development, sales, acting, producing, and filmmaking to build a company centered on projects he believed deserved to be brought to life.
A Queen's Runway and the Road to Netflix

With his first short film, on which he served as executive producer and director, Erik Sopracasa earned an IndieFEST Award of Recognition for Direction, a Best Director award at the Brussels Capital Film Festival, and recognition from the PRISMA Rome Film Awards.
His larger breakthrough came with A Queen’s Runway, a feature documentary about Miss Universe Philippines. Developed and produced over six months across the Philippines and the United States, the film became a defining milestone in Sopracasa’s career.
Through MOVART, Sopracasa originated and developed the documentary, secured access, led production, and managed its journey to market without the traditional support of an agent or distributor. Serving as creator, executive producer, and director, he coordinated production across two countries while developing an international distribution strategy.
His efforts secured a worldwide streaming licensing agreement with Netflix. The documentary premiered on Netflix in April 2025 and also reached audiences through Amazon Prime Video. It ranked number one on ABS-CBN’s digital distribution platforms and entered the top 10 in South Korea on JustWatch, demonstrating its international reach.
“For me, the audience is always key. Before developing A Queen’s Runway, I researched the market and recognized the enormous audience for this story, not only in the Philippines but internationally. It captured one of the country's biggest annual events through a unique perspective that had never been explored in a feature documentary before. I believed it was a story that could resonate far beyond the Philippines, and I have always followed one of the earliest principles I learned in business: think local, act global.” – Erik Sopracasa
The experience also highlighted the challenges facing independent creators. While today's entertainment landscape offers unprecedented access to global audiences, access alone does not guarantee stability. Crowded platforms, fragmented audiences, and changing algorithms make visibility and sustainable growth increasingly difficult.
Sopracasa's experience reflects both the opportunities available to independent producers and the determination required to navigate a competitive industry. For him, success extends beyond making a film. It means identifying an audience, building a viable distribution strategy, and creating opportunities for stories to cross borders and connect with viewers worldwide.
Erik Sopracasa, MOVART And The Creator Economy

The creator economy has changed who gets to participate in Hollywood. Accessible cameras, social platforms, and independent intellectual property development allow filmmakers to test ideas, build audiences, and approach partners with evidence. Today, creators are increasingly becoming media companies in their own right.
Still, Erik Sopracasa believes the future belongs neither exclusively to traditional studios nor independent creators. The greatest opportunity may lie between them. Independent production companies that understand both storytelling and economics can bridge creative freedom and professional infrastructure. Sopracasa is building MOVART in that space.
His background makes him uniquely suited to this mission. His corporate experience taught him that every product needs a market. Acting training taught him that every story needs truth. Producing taught him that every vision requires structure. Together, these lessons have shaped MOVART into a studio-minded company with an independent spirit.
Today, Sopracasa is a member of the Television Academy, known for the Emmy Awards, and continues developing MOVART across documentaries, scripted film and television, true crime, sports, and international stories. One project connects his American home with his Belgian roots through a World War II story centered on the Battle of the Bulge. For him, this work is deeply personal, shaped by geography, memory, and the desire to connect cultures through storytelling.
His ambition extends beyond producing content. He aims to build a globally recognized independent production company capable of identifying why a story matters, whom it serves, how it should be produced, and how it can reach the right audience. This balance is rare in an industry often divided between artists who distrust business and executives who underestimate art.
Sopracasa respects both sides. He reads, researches, studies the marketplace, and approaches every project as both an emotional proposition and a business case. Rather than limiting creativity, this discipline makes projects more sustainable in an increasingly crowded entertainment market.
The deeper lesson in the Erik Sopracasa and MOVART journey is not that one Netflix milestone changes everything, but that it can validate a model. It demonstrates how an immigrant filmmaker can build a company, produce internationally, and reach a global platform by combining persistence with strategy.
For emerging creators, founders, and producers, his experience offers practical inspiration. Waiting for permission is not the only path, but independence demands more than inspiration. It requires taste, stamina, financial awareness, partnerships, and a willingness to learn while building.
MOVART continues to evolve, and Sopracasa sees Netflix not as the final destination but as evidence of what is possible. His journey demonstrates that outsiders can build within an established industry without sacrificing their perspective.
For audiences, collaborators, and brands seeking globally relevant stories shaped by craft, strategy, and lived experience, MOVART offers an invitation to explore what comes next.
