The 124th U.S. Open concluded in thrilling fashion at Pinehurst Resort’s Course No. 2, as a new champion emerged in one of golf’s toughest tests. The demanding course, known for its treacherous greens and punishing rough, produced a dramatic final round that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The final day saw multiple lead changes, with tournament favorites Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and defending champion Wyndham Clark all making strong pushes. However, it was rising American star Patrick Cantlay who remained composed under pressure, sinking a crucial birdie on the 17th hole to take the outright lead.
Cantlay, who had come close in previous majors but never sealed the victory, showed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament. His ability to navigate Pinehurst’s difficult fairways and avoid costly mistakes proved to be the difference. His final-round score of 68 secured a one-shot victory, giving him his long-awaited first major championship.
“This means everything to me,” Cantlay said after lifting the trophy. “I’ve worked my entire career for this moment, and to win my first major at such a historic course is truly special.”
The tournament also saw impressive performances from young stars like Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland, who both finished in the top five. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, making what could be one of his final U.S. Open appearances, finished outside the top 30 but was met with standing ovations from fans at every hole.
With the final major of the season approaching, Cantlay’s breakthrough victory could signal the start of a dominant run for the American golfer. His triumph at Pinehurst No. 2 will be remembered as one of the defining moments of the 2024 golf season.
