Justin Verlander’s Return to Houston Astros Ends in Tough Loss to Red Sox
Three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander made his highly anticipated return to the Houston Astros in a game against the Boston Red Sox on August 21, 2024. Despite delivering a solid performance, Verlander and the Astros fell 4-1, as Houston’s offense struggled to generate run support against Boston’s dominant pitching.

Verlander, who rejoined Houston at the trade deadline after a stint with the New York Mets, took the mound at Minute Maid Park in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. The 41-year-old veteran looked sharp early on, striking out five batters in the first three innings while limiting Boston’s offensive production. However, as the game progressed, the Red Sox found ways to capitalize on key scoring opportunities.
In the fifth inning, Rafael Devers broke the deadlock with a two-run double, putting Boston ahead 2-0. Verlander continued to battle through six innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out seven batters. Despite his efforts, the Astros’ offense struggled to break through against Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford, who pitched seven dominant innings and allowed just one run.
Houston’s only scoring play came in the fourth inning when Yordan Alvarez launched a solo home run to deep right field. However, the team failed to capitalize on multiple chances with runners in scoring position, leaving eight men stranded on base. The Red Sox added an insurance run in the eighth inning, securing the victory.
Astros manager Dusty Baker remained optimistic about Verlander’s return, emphasizing that the veteran pitcher’s leadership and experience would be critical for the team’s postseason push. “He showed he’s still got it,” Baker said. “We just didn’t give him the run support he needed tonight.”
Despite the loss, Verlander’s presence in the rotation is expected to bolster Houston’s pitching staff as they battle for a playoff spot. With a tight race unfolding in the American League, the Astros will need to turn things around quickly to keep their postseason hopes alive. Meanwhile, Verlander, known for his late-season dominance, will look to build momentum in his next start as he continues his quest for another championship with Houston.
