Team USA secured its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in men’s basketball, defeating host nation France 89-78 in the final at the Paris 2024 Games. The highly anticipated final saw a strong start from France, with Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert leading the charge on both ends of the court. The host nation’s defense disrupted Team USA’s rhythm in the first half, keeping the score close and energizing the home crowd. At halftime, France held a narrow 43-41 lead, raising hopes of an upset.

However, Team USA responded decisively in the third quarter, ramping up their defensive intensity and executing efficiently on offense. Kevin Durant, playing in his fourth Olympic Games, took over with a series of clutch shots, while Anthony Edwards contributed crucial three-pointers and strong drives to the basket. By the end of the quarter, the U.S. had built a 10-point lead and never looked back.

Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday also played key roles, with Tatum providing scoring support and Holiday locking down France’s perimeter threats. Despite Wembanyama’s strong performance—finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds—France was unable to mount a comeback in the final minutes.

With the victory, Team USA extended its dominance in Olympic basketball, continuing a streak of gold medals that dates back to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Head coach Steve Kerr credited the team’s adaptability and defensive adjustments for the win. “We knew France would give us a tough game, but our guys responded in the second half,” Kerr said. “This group worked hard to represent their country, and they earned this gold medal.”

For Durant, the win marked his fourth Olympic gold, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players in international competition. “Every time I put on this jersey, it’s an honor,” Durant said after the game. “This one feels special, especially winning in France’s home country.”

As the celebrations continue, Team USA will now look ahead to the FIBA World Cup and the next generation of stars poised to carry the program forward.
