The Mercury have faced significant challenges throughout the season, including injuries to key players and frequent lineup adjustments. With their postseason hopes hanging in the balance, the team opted to bring in Billings, a proven forward with experience in high-pressure situations. The 6-foot-4 forward previously played with the Atlanta Dream, where she was known for her physical presence in the paint and her ability to contribute on both ends of the court.

Head coach Nate Tibbetts highlighted the importance of Billings’ skill set in addressing some of the team’s recent struggles. “Monique brings energy, toughness, and a defensive mindset that we need,” Tibbetts said. “She’s a great fit for what we’re looking for at this stage in the season.”

Billings wasted no time making an impact in her debut game against the Dallas Wings, scoring eight points and grabbing six rebounds in limited minutes. Her ability to provide immediate contributions has raised hopes that she could become a key rotational player down the stretch.

Veteran guard Diana Taurasi acknowledged the team’s struggles but remained optimistic about their ability to turn things around. “This has been a tough year, but we’re still in it. Every move we make right now is about positioning ourselves for a strong finish,” Taurasi said.

Currently on the edge of the playoff race, the Mercury are making every effort to secure a spot in the postseason. If Billings performs well during her short-term contract, there is a strong possibility that she could be signed for the remainder of the season.

The addition of Billings highlights Phoenix’s urgency in addressing roster gaps and making a final push toward playoff qualification. As the WNBA season nears its conclusion, every game becomes critical, and the Mercury will be counting on Billings to provide the spark they need.
