Meta has reaffirmed its commitment to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) with a series of major product announcements at its annual Connect conference. The event showcased Meta’s latest hardware innovations, including the budget-friendly Quest 3S VR headset and the highly anticipated Orion AR glasses.
The Quest 3S, an entry-level VR headset, is designed to make immersive experiences more accessible to a broader audience. Priced lower than the premium Quest 3 model, the new headset aims to expand VR adoption beyond hardcore gamers and tech enthusiasts. It features improved ergonomics, enhanced display resolution, and a more lightweight design, making it a strong competitor in the growing VR market.
The Orion AR glasses represent an even bolder step into the future of spatial computing. Meta has been working on AR technology for years, and Orion marks its first true consumer-ready smart glasses with advanced interactive capabilities. Unlike previous iterations, Orion features a fully transparent display, allowing users to overlay digital information onto the real world seamlessly. The device integrates with Meta’s AI assistant and enables hands-free interactions, making it a potential game-changer for productivity and entertainment.
Despite Meta’s ambitious push into AR and VR, skepticism remains about whether the technology will achieve mainstream adoption. While Meta has invested billions into building the metaverse, consumer demand for VR headsets has been inconsistent, and past AR efforts, such as Google Glass and Microsoft’s HoloLens, have struggled to gain traction.

Meta’s Connect conference also featured updates on Horizon Worlds, its social VR platform, and new developer tools aimed at expanding the metaverse ecosystem. The company is encouraging third-party developers to create applications that enhance the AR/VR experience, hoping to drive greater user engagement.
While the success of Meta’s latest hardware remains to be seen, the company’s continued investment signals that it is not backing down from its metaverse vision. The Quest 3S and Orion AR glasses could play a crucial role in shaping the future of immersive computing, but their market performance will ultimately determine whether Meta’s bet on AR and VR pays off.
