The pressure of competition is not always visible from the outside. For athletes, preparation can involve confidence, concentration, emotional regulation, resilience, and the ability to remain focused when expectations rise. These elements have become central to the work of Orlando Castro, M.S., a Mental Performance Consultant and Athlete Development Specialist whose career spans more than three decades across athletics, psychology, behavioral health, and youth development.

Castro is the President and Mental Performance Consultant of Awakenings Consulting, LLC, a role he has held since 2019. Through the practice, he provides mental performance coaching for collegiate and professional athletes, including athletes from the University of Miami and Florida International University. His work focuses on areas such as confidence, focus, resilience, and performance consistency, while his professional experience also includes providing mental performance services to professional athletes, including Formula 1 race car drivers.

Orlando Castro Brings Mental Performance Into Athlete Development

The foundation of Castro's approach comes from a career that has developed across several connected disciplines. His areas of expertise include performance under pressure, mental toughness development, confidence building, focus and concentration training, visualization and imagery techniques, goal setting, pre competition mental preparation, performance anxiety management, and resilience and recovery.

His work also extends beyond individual performance. Castro's athlete development experience includes collegiate athlete support, professional athlete performance enhancement, team culture and communication, student athlete transition support, motivation and mindset training, emotional regulation, and career and identity development.

That broader experience has also led Castro to work with organizations involved in professional baseball. According to his professional background, he has conducted presentations and workshops on mental health, leadership, resilience, and peak performance for scouts with the Los Angeles Angels MLB organization. He has also conducted mental performance and psychological assessments for elite athletes projected as first round draft picks for the White Sox MLB organization.

From Baseball Coaching to Mental Performance

Long before establishing Awakenings Consulting, Castro built a substantial background in baseball coaching. From 1985 to 1987, he coached competitive travel baseball teams through the Boys & Girls Club in Miami. He later served as an assistant baseball coach at Coral Gables High School from 1988 to 1998, where he mentored student athletes in athletic performance, discipline, leadership, and personal development.

His coaching career included athletes who later reached Major League Baseball. His professional background identifies Mike Lowell, Juan Alvarez, Elisier Marrero, Ross Atkins, and Alex Rodriguez among the players he coached during his years in baseball.

That experience provided a practical foundation for understanding athletes and the environments in which they develop. Over time, Castro's professional path expanded from athletic coaching into psychology and behavioral health, creating a foundation for his current work in mental performance.
