Presented in partnership with African American Weekend (aaw-paris.com), this event is made possible through the efforts of the Honorable Mayor Mohamed Gnabaly of L'Île-Saint-Denis, France.
Films participating in the festival include: "Dear Josephine" delves into the life of Josephine Baker, an American-born French dancer, singer, and actress celebrated as the "Black Venus," "Black Pearl," "Bronze Venus," and "Creole Goddess." Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker was a key figure in the French Resistance during World War II, earning the Resistance Medal, Croix de Guerre, and Légion d'honneur. Directed by Amber Monet, "Dear Josephine" captures Baker's remarkable life and enduring influence. As well as
"September 11th UnSung Sheros" is a documentary that honors six Black women, including the first female NYPD chaplain and five 9-1-1 operators, who played crucial roles during the 9/11 attacks. Despite their significant contributions, they have remained largely unrecognized until now. Ambassador Suzan Cook, the filmmaker, ensures their stories are finally told.
The festival also includes bonus features such as an exclusive interview with Sharon-Preston Folta, daughter of the global icon Louis Armstrong and with Wendy Hilliard, a major force in women’s, Olympic, and community sports. Wendy was the first Black gymnast to represent the United States globally and served on the Rhythmic Gymnastics.
"We are thrilled to host this special event during the 2024 Summer Olympics to honor the legacies of Josephine Baker and Alice Coachman," said Terra Renee, Founder and President of AAWIC. "These remarkable women paved the way for future generations and continue to inspire us with their talent, courage, and resilience.
