Bright Lights Series: Amplifying Black Youth Voices in Literature

St. Louis, MO – December 18, 2024 (USANews.com) – Author Darian Wigfall is making waves in middle-grade literature with his groundbreaking Bright Lights Series, a collection of books that amplify the voices of Black youth through powerful and realistic storytelling. Designed for readers ages nine and up, the series explores the often-overlooked experiences of urban and suburban Black children, presenting narratives filled with authenticity, resilience, and humanity.

The Bright Lights Series includes A Dying Breed, Volume 1 and Not So Princess Jasmine, Volume 1, both of which focus on unique yet relatable protagonists: DeShaun and Jasmine. These characters navigate distinct environments while reflecting the strength and creativity of Black youth growing up in America.

In A Dying Breed, readers meet DeShaun, a young boy growing up in an underserved urban community. Wigfall delivers a candid portrayal of the challenges DeShaun faces, including poverty, gang activity, and self-worth struggles, while highlighting his determination to overcome his circumstances. DeShaun’s story reflects the experiences of countless young boys, offering readers a deeper understanding of life in urban America.

Not So Princess Jasmine shifts the lens to Jasmine, a young girl whose family moves to a suburban neighborhood in search of better opportunities. While Jasmine’s new environment is far removed from DeShaun’s, she confronts a different set of obstacles, including societal biases and the complexities of fitting into predominantly white spaces. Jasmine’s story brings nuance to the experiences of Black girls, showcasing their intelligence, adaptability, and resilience.

Through these books, Wigfall creates stories that resonate with readers of all backgrounds, sparking critical conversations about race, identity, and community. “The voice of Black youth that is denied in other places is loud and clear in my books,” Wigfall states. By centering these voices, Wigfall’s work provides representation while challenging stereotypes and inspiring empathy.

The Bright Lights Series is available through major online retailers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Wigfall also plans to conclude the series with a final novel that will follow DeShaun and Jasmine through their high school years, bringing their journeys full circle.
