Nationwide – January 27, 2025(USANews.com) – Over a century after the legendary “Fight of the Century” in Reno, Nevada, Jack Johnson’s voice resonates with a new generation. Dr. Joel A. Freeman, an esteemed historian and founder of the Freeman Institute® Foundation, is unveiling an extraordinary 78 rpm recording that captures Johnson’s reflections on his groundbreaking victory over the Great White Hope, James Jeffries. This unparalleled artifact, meticulously preserved and enhanced through modern artificial intelligence, is at the center of the just-released publication, Jack Johnson Speaks.
The recording, made just twenty days after Johnson’s historic July 4th, 1910 bout, offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the mind of the world’s first Black heavyweight boxing champion. In his own voice, Johnson verbalizes the strategic brilliance behind his decisive win, emphasizing the meticulous preparation and unyielding resilience that carried him to triumph.
Dr. Freeman explains, “This isn’t just a recording; it’s a window into history, a testament to Jack Johnson’s intellect, courage, and unshakable spirit during one of the most racially divided periods in America.”
The Columbia 78 rpm test pressing, a record weighing one pound, is believed to be the only known original copy of this particular recording. Acquired by Dr. Freeman from a British antiquarian record dealer, the artifact is authenticated by its unique Columbia Phonograph Co. Matrix number (16452-1) and accompanied by historical documents, including a 1974 Hobbies magazine article and correspondence with renowned record collector David Goldenberg. Goldenberg described the 12-inch-wide record as “a rarity that belongs in a museum.”
Using state-of-the-art AI technology, the Freeman Institute® has reduced the recording’s hiss and pop, while amplifying Johnson’s voice for clarity. These enhancements ensure that listeners can fully grasp Johnson’s 10-point “war strategy,” a tactical framework that seamlessly integrates physical prowess, mental acuity, and spiritual resilience.
Dr. Freeman’s publication provides a detailed analysis of this strategy, positioning it as a timeless masterclass for overcoming almost insurmountable odds. The print edition of Jack Johnson Speaks also includes a QR code linking to a 4-minute music video featuring archival footage of the bout and a blues-inspired soundtrack. The video offers a lyrical prelude to the recording, setting the stage for individuals to hear Jack Johnson’s reflections for themselves.
As Mark Henry, WWE’s World Heavyweight Champion, puts it:
“I want to invite you to step into the mind of a genius and also into the heart of a trash-talking boxer with a golden smile on his face, relentlessly attacking each opponent in the ring. Jack Johnson’s legacy deserves to be celebrated, and this work is a powerful tribute to his spirit and wisdom. Jack Johnson Speaks packs a powerful punch – weaving together history, strategy, and music to showcase the greatness of Jack. Joel Freeman has designed an experience that will leave readers inspired and in awe of Johnson’s genius, fortitude, and a voice for the ages.”
The unveiling of this historic recording coincides with Black History Month, an intentional decision to honor the legacy of Jack Johnson and the broader narrative of Black resilience and excellence. Dr. Freeman’s initiative aligns with the mission of the Freeman Institute® Foundation, which houses over 3,000 authentic Black history documents and artifacts (the oldest dated 1553). Many of Dr. Freeman’s historic items have been showcased at prestigious venues, including the United Nations, the Clinton Presidential Library, Secret Service, FBI, and the White House Communications Agency, educating millions and preserving the rich tapestry of Black history.
The release of Jack Johnson Speaks also serves a larger purpose. Through a suggested $10 donation, the first 5,000 supporters receive a copy of the limited print edition signed by the author, while contributing to the Freeman Institute® Foundation’s ambitious Rosetta Universe® project. This global initiative aims to transform an ancient artifact – the Rosetta Stone – into a modern metaphor for critical thinking and problem-solving skills by leveraging innovative technology and storytelling. Dr. Freeman’s vision for the Rosetta Universe® project has garnered the support of prominent figures such as Smokey Robinson, Dr. Ben Carson, Cathy Hughes, and Mohamed Mustafa, a curator at the Grand Egyptian Museum – all members of the project’s advisory board. By integrating the Johnson recording into this initiative, Freeman seeks to inspire individuals worldwide, amplifying the enduring relevance of Johnson’s story. This is the type of innovative, problem-solving initiative that would have attracted the interest and passion of the likes of Jack Johnson.
Dr. Freeman’s unique background further distinguishes this effort. As the coauthor of the K-12 Black History 365 curriculum (with Dr. Walter Milton, Jr.), Freeman has already made significant strides in reshaping how Black history is taught in schools. The curriculum, currently adopted by over 420 public school districts, includes a comprehensive exploration of history from ancient Africa to the North Star’s guidance for many to Canada and everything in between. Jack Johnson’s life and achievements are included in the encyclopedic volume.
For Dr. Freeman, this project is deeply personal. “This is more than a historical artifact,” he reflects. “It’s a tool to educate, inspire, and create connections across generations. Jack Johnson’s voice still has the power to motivate us to overcome adversity with grace and determination.”
The Freeman Institute® Foundation invites the public to join this journey by exploring Jack Johnson Speaks and contributing to the Rosetta Universe® project. Together, these initiatives aim to bridge the past and present, fostering a deeper understanding of history and its lessons for the future.
