Game Highlights
Auburn's guard, Miles Kelly, delivered a standout performance, scoring a season-high 30 points, including a career-best nine three-pointers. Chad Baker-Mazara and Tahaad Pettiford also contributed significantly, adding 22 and 21 points respectively. This win not only extended Auburn's winning streak to six games but also clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular-season title for the Tigers.
The Tigers established dominance early, initiating a 14-2 run that transformed a narrow 7-6 lead into a commanding 21-8 advantage within the first eight minutes. They maintained this momentum, closing the first half with an 11-2 spurt to lead 49-34 at halftime. Auburn's offensive efficiency was evident, shooting 51.8% from the field and making 12 three-pointers.
Kentucky's Struggles
The Wildcats faced challenges, notably the absence of third-leading scorer Jaxson Robinson due to a wrist injury. Leading scorer Otega Oweh was limited to just four points, marking only the second time this season he failed to reach double figures. Despite Koby Brea's 21 points and Andrew Carr's 20 points, Kentucky struggled with turnovers, committing 18, which Auburn converted into 21 points. The Wildcats also struggled from beyond the arc, making only four three-pointers compared to Auburn's 12.
Post-Game Reactions
Auburn's post-game celebration included players mimicking a belt-whipping gesture on the court, a display that drew criticism from Kentucky's head coach, Mark Pope. Expressing his displeasure, Pope remarked, "It hurts me to the bottom of my heart; I know it hurts BBN, but Auburn came in, and they beat us, and they got to celebrate. That's it. If you don't want guys celebrating, then win the ... ."
Looking Ahead
The Wildcats, now 19-10 overall and 8-8 in the SEC, aim to regroup as they prepare to host LSU on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Auburn, boasting a 27-2 overall record and 15-1 in the SEC, will travel to face No. 12 Texas A&M, seeking to maintain their top ranking and momentum heading into the postseason.
This victory not only underscores Auburn's dominance this season but also highlights areas Kentucky needs to address as they approach tournament play.
