Boy Scouts of America Rebrands as ‘Scouting America’ in Historic Name Change

On May 5, 2024, the Boy Scouts of America announced it would officially rebrand as Scouting America, effective February 8, 2025. The change reflects the organization’s commitment to inclusivity, following years of policy shifts allowing girls, LGBTQ+ members, and non-binary youth to join.

For the first time in its 114-year history, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is changing its name. On May 5, 2024, the organization announced that it will rebrand as "Scouting America", a move aimed at reflecting its commitment to inclusivity. The change will officially take effect on February 8, 2025, coinciding with the organization’s 115th anniversary.

The name change comes after several years of evolving membership policies. In 2017, BSA began allowing girls to join Cub Scouts, and in 2019, the flagship program formerly known as "Boy Scouts" was renamed Scouts BSA, welcoming both boys and girls. The organization also introduced measures to be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ scouts and leaders, reinforcing its mission to serve all youth.

“This is a monumental step forward,” said Roger Krone, President and CEO of Scouting America. “We are reinforcing our commitment to building character, leadership, and outdoor skills for all young people—regardless of gender or background.”

The announcement was met with mixed reactions. Supporters praised the decision as a reflection of modern values, ensuring that scouting remains relevant in today’s society. “As a girl in Scouts BSA, I feel like I finally belong,” said 14-year-old Emma Rodriguez, who joined after the organization opened membership to girls.

However, some traditionalists criticized the change, arguing that it moves away from the organization’s original identity. “Boy Scouts have always been about tradition,” said former scout leader James Callahan. “I worry that the new name might erase some of that history.”

Despite the controversy, Scouting America continues to focus on expanding its programs. The organization has reported a 13% increase in membership since opening its ranks to girls, and leaders believe the rebranding will further strengthen participation.

The move also follows years of financial and legal struggles, including a 2022 bankruptcy settlement related to lawsuits over past abuse claims. With the name change, Scouting America hopes to usher in a new era focused on youth development and inclusivity.
