The Leap That Changed Everything
NATIONWIDE - AUGUST 2025 - (USAnews.com) — It was the kind of decision that many would call irrational. A mother and seasoned educator in the UK, Prof. Adina Cristina Tulbure booked a ticket to Ghana on a modest teaching salary, determined to meet a young man she had never seen in person but whose vision had ignited something deep within her. She wasn’t chasing adventure. She was following a dream that mirrored her own youthful longing for freedom, education, and cultural connection.
Three years earlier, in Accra, a brilliant 20-year-old Ghanaian student, Martin Kweku Tsogbe, was studying Computer Science online through a scholarship from the University of the People in California. He had an idea: an innovative online school that would bring high-quality education to underserved communities, starting with the Romanian diaspora in the UK.
When he shared his concept with Prof. Tulbure, she saw not just a project but a mission worthy of her mentorship, time, and trust.
From Vision to Reality
The story of Britannia International Academy began without boardroom strategies, corporate investors, or large-scale infrastructure. It grew from mentorship, determination, and the courage to commit to an idea when no one else would.
Prof. Tulbure coached and supported Martin Kweku Tsogbe, even funding the early stages from her own salary. Within a year, he moved to Romania to launch the Romanian branch of the academy, where he took on the role of branch manager. There, he built a team of gifted Ghanaian teachers and students, creating an educational bridge between Europe and Africa.
From the outset, the academy’s mission was clear: to keep children engaged in education, encourage cultural exchange, and remove the barriers geography can place on learning.
Recognition on the International Stage
The academy’s approach soon gained international attention. Its achievements have been acknowledged with several honors, including:
World Book of Records Award presented at the House of Parliament in London
Honoris Causa Distinction in Rome
Global Peace Award in Stockholm, recognizing its work in bridging cultural and educational divides
These awards highlight the academy’s contribution to promoting education across continents and fostering meaningful connections between communities.
The Human Side of Learning
What distinguishes Britannia International Academy is its people. The teaching staff, largely composed of young Ghanaian educators, bring both academic skill and cultural depth. Students gain more than subject knowledge; they experience perspectives from both African and European contexts in every lesson.
Initially supported by an American curriculum provider, the academy later became accredited through a British awarding body. This combination ensures academic rigor while allowing flexibility to adapt to students’ diverse needs.
Prof. Tulbure reflects, “He reminded me of myself as a young woman in a communist country, hungry for freedom, knowledge, and connection. That same drive made me believe in his vision, even when it meant taking risks.”

A Turning Point
The academy’s defining breakthrough came when it proved capable of serving students across multiple countries while preserving a personal, community-focused approach. Families in the UK Romanian diaspora began to see it not only as an online school but as a network of shared cultural understanding.
At the same time, African students benefited from exposure to international academic standards, while European students experienced the richness of African heritage and viewpoints.
Why the Model Works
Britannia International Academy continues to thrive because it:
Centers on mentorship, fostering talent and leadership from within the community
Bridges cultures, offering a global classroom that values diverse perspectives
Maintains high academic standards through accredited programs
Originates from a commitment to mission rather than commercial motives
Looking Forward
Today, Britannia International Academy stands as an example of how education, when driven by purpose, can transcend borders. It is expanding programs designed to connect communities, encourage cross-cultural dialogue, and prepare students to become global citizens.
As Prof. Tulbure reflects, the journey began with one shared vision and the courage to act. The reward has been in the lives and futures shaped along the way.
