A Journey Fueled by Passion and Purpose
NATIONWIDE - OCTOBER 2025 - (USAnews.com) — In a bustling dance studio in Lagos, Buddy Doubara Agedah moves with the rhythm of his Afro-Latin beats, his body telling a story of resilience, innovation, and cultural diplomacy. As he leads a new group of dancers through intricate steps, the atmosphere is electric. This is not just dance; it’s a powerful movement that connects people, celebrates heritage, and fosters unity.
From humble beginnings in Nigeria to becoming an internationally recognized dance leader, Buddy’s journey has been extraordinary. As the founder and director of Dance & Art Alive, a premier cultural organization based in Nigeria, Buddy’s vision was clear: to use dance as a tool for cultural exchange, youth empowerment, and social impact.
The Birth of Dance & Art Alive
Buddy’s story began over two decades ago when he first entered the world of dance. What started as a personal passion evolved into a mission to make dance accessible to the wider community. He founded Dance & Art Alive to bring together dancers, enthusiasts, and artists from diverse backgrounds while offering them opportunities for professional growth.
Through Dance & Art Alive, Buddy has established one of the most vibrant social dance communities in West Africa. The platform hosts weekly dance events and workshops in Lagos and Abuja, focusing on Afro-Latin and traditional African dance. It has trained and employed hundreds of dancers, many of whom have gone on to achieve international recognition. Dance & Art Alive is not just a dance company; it’s an ecosystem that supports creativity, entrepreneurship, and cultural development.
The West African Afro-Latin Dance Festival: A Celebration of Culture and Unity

One of Buddy’s most significant contributions is the creation of the West African Afro-Latin Dance Festival Nigeria. This annual multicultural event, held in Lagos and Abuja, brings together dancers, enthusiasts, and ambassadors from across Africa, the UK, and Europe. For the past 13 years, Buddy has organized this festival, creating enduring platforms for local and international dance enthusiasts to connect, learn, and showcase their talents.
The festival has attracted dignitaries such as Ambassador Miriam Morales of Cuba, Ambassador Alberto Castelar of Venezuela, and representatives of the Norwegian Embassy in Nigeria, who once presented Buddy with a symbolic gift celebrating Norway’s relationship with Nigeria. Students of the Colombian government’s “Español para el Mundo” program have also participated, solidifying the festival’s role as a hub for international cultural exchange.
Through these collaborations, Buddy has formed partnerships, including one with the Honorary Consulate of Colombia in Nigeria, led by Honorary Consul Maricel Romero Cantillo. These alliances have propelled the festival to new heights, creating a bridge between African and Latin American cultures.
The Buddy Dance Cup: Reviving Teamwork and Excellence in Nigerian Dance
In line with his mission to strengthen dance culture in Africa, Buddy created the Buddy Dance Cup, a national competition designed to revive partner and team dancing in Nigeria. Originally conceptualized in 2008 through his Buddy Dance TV platform and relaunched in 2021, the competition has evolved from a Latin-focused event into a vibrant multi-genre contest featuring salsa, Afro, and fusion dance styles.
The Buddy Dance Cup is more than a competition; it’s a movement to restore collaboration, creativity, and purpose to Nigeria’s dance industry. Through this initiative, Buddy has reignited hope among dancers, inspiring them to work together, choreograph meaningful performances, and represent Nigeria on international stages.
Now a major highlight of the annual West African Afro-Latin Dance Festival, the Buddy Dance Cup stands as a symbol of unity, resilience, and artistic excellence. Buddy recently hosted the Salsa competition in Lagos, announcing winners on October 19. The excitement continues as he prepares for another event in November in Abuja, offering both fierce competition and growth opportunities.
Buddy recently hosted the Buddy Dance Cup Salsa competition in Lagos, and just last night, 19th OCT., the winners were announced. These events have become key moments for the dance community, offering both fierce competition and a platform for growth and exposure.
Dance as a Tool for Health and Social Impact
Buddy stands out as a creative force who has mastered blending performance with purpose. He has consistently demonstrated that dance is not just movement; it’s a catalyst for social change, health advocacy, and community transformation.
In 2007, Buddy transformed the Lagos Yacht Club’s annual Music on the Lagoon event into Music and Dance on the Lagoon, merging art and advocacy in a production that raised over ₦6.1 million ($55,000) for charity. Supported by Julius Berger and featuring UK opera singer Seija Knight, the event showed how creativity could inspire compassion and impact lives. The success led to a partnership with Mobil Producing Nigeria (ExxonMobil), where Buddy produced five major dance productions between 2008 and 2012 addressing child education, malaria prevention, and child trafficking.
Through Dance & Art Alive, Buddy continues to tackle health and social challenges. Partnering with the Green Field Cancer Care Foundation and the Sebeccly Cancer Care Foundation, he introduced free breast cancer screenings into his festivals; an initiative that has led to early detections and saved lives.
For Buddy, dance transcends entertainment; it is a tool for healing and empowerment, a platform to raise awareness on critical issues, especially those affecting women. Through his festivals and productions, he continues to prove that art can be a transformative force for good.
A Legacy of Mentorship and Empowerment
Buddy’s influence extends far beyond his own accomplishments. As a mentor and community builder, he has trained hundreds of dancers who have gone on to lead successful careers. His commitment to empowering the next generation of artists is evident in his dedication to providing both creative employment and professional development opportunities.
In his role as a leader and visionary, Buddy has reshaped the dance landscape in West Africa and established a model for how art can intersect with business, health, and social advocacy.
Recognition and Accolades

Buddy’s groundbreaking work in the arts has earned him numerous honors and two major international recognitions. In 2025, he made history as the first non-Ghanaian recipient of the Ghana Dance Merit Award for Afro-Latin Dance Development in West Africa. He also received the Benin International Dance Festival (BIDAF) honorary distinction award for promoting Afro-Latin dance across West Africa and the Francophone community.
His achievements have been acknowledged by the Guild of Nigerian Dance Practitioners (GONDP), the Society for the Performing Arts in Nigeria (SPAN), and by the Lagos State Governor for his contributions to dance through the QDANCE Company, as well as by the Grand Awards and the Bodylanguage Dance Company.

These accolades speak to Buddy’s unwavering commitment to dance, culture, and social change. But for Buddy, the greatest reward comes from the impact he has made on the lives of others. Whether it’s through creating opportunities for dancers or using dance to promote wellness, Buddy’s legacy is one of empowerment, unity, and resilience.
Dance with a Purpose: The Future of Dance & Art Alive
As Buddy continues to build on his success, he remains focused on expanding the reach of Dance & Art Alive and the West African Afro-Latin Dance Festival Nigeria.
