Caitlin Clark has officially rewritten college basketball history. On March 1, 2024, the University of Iowa superstar became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I history, surpassing the legendary Pete Maravich’s record of 3,667 career points—a mark that had stood unchallenged for over five decades.
Clark, a 6-foot guard known for her deep three-pointers, elite court vision, and dynamic scoring ability, entered the game against Ohio State needing just 18 points to surpass Maravich. With a signature long-range three-pointer in the second quarter, she reached 3,686 career points, cementing her place as the highest scorer in NCAA history—men’s or women’s basketball.
The game was momentarily paused as Clark’s teammates, coaches, and thousands of fans in attendance erupted in celebration. The Iowa star raised her hands in appreciation, visibly emotional as the crowd chanted her name.
“This is a dream come true,” Clark said after the game. “To be mentioned alongside legends like Pistol Pete is surreal, but I couldn’t have done this without my teammates, coaches, and the amazing fans who have supported me every step of the way.”
Clark’s achievement is even more remarkable considering the differences in playing eras. Maravich set his record in just three seasons (1967-1970) without a three-point line, while Clark benefited from four full seasons and modern gameplay strategies. Nonetheless, her ability to dominate at the highest level of college basketball has made her a generational talent.
With her scoring record now in the books, Clark’s next chapter awaits in the WNBA, where she is expected to be the No. 1 overall draft pick. Experts predict that her star power and electric playstyle will not only boost WNBA ratings and ticket sales but also inspire the next generation of young female athletes.
As Iowa continues its pursuit of an NCAA championship, Clark’s impact extends beyond statistics—she has redefined women’s college basketball, proving that her influence on the game will be felt for years to come.
