The opening round of the NCAA Tournament is known for its high drama, but few games have sparked as much controversy as Wagner’s heartbreaking exit against Saint Francis (PA). A questionable foul call in the closing seconds allowed Saint Francis to secure a 63-62 victory, ending Wagner’s tournament hopes in a bitter fashion.
With under 10 seconds remaining and Wagner leading by one point, Saint Francis guard Josh Cohen drove to the basket and appeared to be met with clean defense from Wagner’s senior forward Brandon Brown. However, the referees blew the whistle, calling a foul on Brown and sending Cohen to the free-throw line with just 1.2 seconds left on the clock.
Despite protests from Wagner players and coaches, the call stood. Cohen calmly sank both free throws, giving Saint Francis the lead. Wagner attempted a desperation heave at the buzzer, but the shot fell short, sealing their elimination.
The controversial call immediately became a hot topic on social media, with analysts and fans debating whether it was a legitimate foul or an unnecessary whistle in a game-deciding moment. Many pointed to replay angles that suggested minimal contact, arguing that the referees should have let the players decide the outcome.
Wagner head coach Donald Copeland was visibly frustrated in his post-game press conference but remained composed. “I won’t say too much about the call,” Copeland stated. “We played our hearts out, and that’s what I’ll remember. It’s just tough to see a game end that way.”
Despite the tough ending, Wagner’s season was still considered a success. The team exceeded expectations throughout the year, earning an NCAA Tournament bid and putting up a strong fight in the opening round. However, the sting of the controversial call will likely linger for players and fans alike.
For Saint Francis, the win moves them into the next round, but even their players acknowledged the controversy surrounding the finish. “We played hard, and sometimes the game just goes your way,” Cohen said.
As March Madness continues, the debate over officiating decisions will remain a focal point. For Wagner, their season is over—but they won’t soon forget how it ended.
