Los Angeles FC added another piece of silverware to its collection, winning the U.S. Open Cup for the first time in club history with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City in extra time on September 29, 2024. The triumph at BMO Stadium solidified LAFC’s reputation as one of Major League Soccer’s premier franchises.

The final was a tightly contested battle, with both teams creating several scoring opportunities throughout regulation. Kansas City struck first in the 34th minute with a goal from Alan Pulido, putting the visitors ahead in what was a defensive battle. LAFC, however, responded in the second half, equalizing in the 72nd minute thanks to a well-placed strike from Carlos Vela.

With the match tied at the end of regulation, extra time was required to determine a winner. LAFC wasted no time asserting its dominance, with Denis Bouanga scoring a crucial goal in the 98th minute after a well-timed pass from Ilie Sánchez. The home crowd erupted as LAFC took control of the game. Just before the final whistle, Cristian Olivera sealed the victory with a powerful strike in the 116th minute, ensuring that the trophy would stay in Los Angeles.

The victory marked LAFC’s first U.S. Open Cup title and their third major domestic trophy since joining MLS in 2018. Head coach Steve Cherundolo praised his team’s resilience, noting that the players remained focused even after falling behind early. “This team has always been built on perseverance and belief,” Cherundolo said post-match. “We knew we had the quality to come back, and we proved it tonight.”

For Sporting Kansas City, the loss was a heartbreaking end to an otherwise impressive tournament run. Despite controlling large portions of the match, the team struggled to convert key chances in extra time, allowing LAFC to capitalize on its opportunities.

With the Open Cup victory secured, LAFC now shifts its attention back to the MLS regular season, where it remains in contention for another deep playoff run. The team’s success in knockout competitions continues to reinforce its standing as one of the strongest clubs in North American soccer.
