Minnesota Vikings Decline to Franchise Tag Sam Darnold, Opening Free Agency Door

The Minnesota Vikings have opted not to place the franchise tag on quarterback Sam Darnold, allowing him to enter free agency. Despite leading the team to a 14-3 record in 2024, the Vikings’ decision suggests they may be seeking a long-term solution at quarterback, leaving Darnold’s future uncertain.

The Minnesota Vikings have made a surprising offseason decision by declining to use the franchise tag on quarterback Sam Darnold, who now becomes one of the most intriguing free agents on the market. Despite leading Minnesota to a strong 14-3 season, the team appears to be moving in a different direction.

Darnold, 27, took over as the Vikings’ starting quarterback after Kirk Cousins’ departure in 2023. Though his performance was steady—throwing for 3,800 yards and 26 touchdowns—questions remain about his ability to lead a team deep into the playoffs. While he helped Minnesota secure the NFC North title, their postseason run ended in disappointment, fueling speculation that the franchise might be looking for an upgrade at quarterback.

By opting not to use the franchise tag, which would have kept Darnold under contract for another season at a high salary, the Vikings have signaled their willingness to explore other options. This decision opens the door for potential moves in the NFL Draft or free agency, where Minnesota could target a younger, long-term quarterback solution.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell addressed the situation in a press conference, stating, “Sam did a great job for us this season, and we appreciate everything he brought to the team. This decision wasn’t easy, but we have to evaluate all options moving forward.”

Darnold now enters free agency as one of the top quarterbacks available, alongside names like Justin Fields and Baker Mayfield. Teams in need of a veteran quarterback, such as the Denver Broncos or Pittsburgh Steelers, could express interest in signing him.

As for the Vikings, their decision not to tag Darnold adds intrigue to their offseason plans. With a talented roster already in place, finding the right quarterback could be the key to taking the next step toward Super Bowl contention.
