Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion and one of the most influential athletes of all time, added another milestone to her illustrious career by hosting the 2024 ESPY Awards. The event, which honors the best in sports over the past year, was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and featured a star-studded lineup of athletes and entertainers.
Williams, who became the first Black female athlete to host the ceremony, used her platform to celebrate athletic excellence while also highlighting the ongoing fight for gender and racial equality in sports. In her opening monologue, she reflected on her journey from Compton to becoming one of the most decorated athletes in history.
“When I started playing tennis, I didn’t see many faces that looked like mine in the sport,” Williams said. “But I knew that if I worked hard, I could change that—and I think we have.”
The night’s biggest winners included Patrick Mahomes, who took home Best Male Athlete after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to another Super Bowl victory, and Simone Biles, who won Best Female Athlete following her dominant gymnastics comeback.
Williams also took time to honor past ESPY winners, including Billie Jean King and Kobe Bryant, reminding the audience of the legacy left by trailblazers in the sports world. The ceremony included tributes to athletes who used their platforms for social change, a cause Williams has championed throughout her career.
Her hosting gig was widely praised, with fans and critics alike calling it one of the most powerful and entertaining ESPY ceremonies in recent memory. As Williams transitions from professional tennis to new endeavors, her presence at the ESPYs reaffirmed her influence beyond the court.
“Sports have the power to change lives,” Williams concluded. “And that’s something worth celebrating.”
