The National Rugby League (NRL) is setting its sights on the United States as it looks to expand its global reach. With rugby league gaining popularity beyond its traditional strongholds in Australia and New Zealand, investors and league officials are evaluating opportunities to introduce the sport to a broader U.S. audience through strategic broadcasting and streaming partnerships.

David Nathanson, a key investor and former FOX Sports executive, has emphasized the potential for NRL games to thrive in the American sports market. He believes rugby league could attract new fans due to its high-impact style of play, fast-paced action, and similarities to American football. With the rise of streaming services and alternative sports content, NRL matches could find an audience among U.S. viewers who are looking for year-round contact sports entertainment.

The NRL has already taken steps to test the market. In early 2024, the league launched a dedicated streaming platform that allows American fans to watch live matches, replays, and behind-the-scenes content. Additionally, select NRL games have been broadcast on U.S. sports networks, helping to introduce the league to new audiences.

One of the biggest indicators of rugby league’s potential in the U.S. is the increasing participation in grassroots and collegiate rugby programs. With more American universities forming rugby teams and international competitions like the Rugby League World Cup gaining traction, the sport is slowly making inroads into mainstream U.S. sports culture.

NRL officials have also expressed interest in hosting a marquee match in the U.S., similar to how the NFL stages international games in London and Germany.
