She Set Out to Write a Book. She Ended Up Starting a Movement.
During the pandemic, J. René Walker started writing a homebuying guide, but her research soon inspired a broader mission to help women buy homes.

After more than two decades in real estate, Walker planned to create a practical guide for first-time homebuyers. She wanted to explain mortgages, contracts, inspections, closing costs, and the many decisions that can make the process feel overwhelming.
As her research deepened, however, the project began to change.
Walker kept returning to the experiences of Black women who wanted to become homeowners. Through her professional work and research, she observed that some prospective buyers had steady careers and could manage monthly housing payments, yet still struggled with the upfront costs required to purchase a home. Down payments, inspections, closing expenses, and other fees could become significant obstacles.
“That’s when everything changed,” Walker says. “I realized education wasn’t enough. If I really wanted to make a difference, I had to help remove the barriers.”
The book, Her First Place, was still completed. But the idea behind it grew beyond the page.
Her First Place became the foundation for a nonprofit organization focused on helping Black women better understand the homebuying process, connect with trusted professionals, and pursue first-time homeownership with greater support.
More Than a House
Ask Walker what Her First Place, Inc. represents, and she does not begin with the physical structure of a home.
She begins with legacy.
“I don’t believe we’re in the business of helping women buy houses,” she says. “We’re helping families acquire their first wealth-building asset. The house is simply the vehicle.”
For some families, homeownership can become an important step toward long-term stability. A home may provide a sense of permanence, create opportunities to build equity over time, and give future generations a stronger financial foundation. Walker views the process not simply as a transaction, but as a turning point that can influence an entire family.
That philosophy shapes the work of Her First Place, Inc.
The organization combines homebuyer education, workshops, professional guidance, and financial support for eligible participants. Its goal is to help women move from uncertainty to informed action while giving them access to resources that may make the process more manageable.
Walker believes education remains essential. Prospective buyers need to understand credit, financing, inspections, contracts, and the responsibilities that come with ownership. At the same time, she recognizes that information alone may not resolve every obstacle.
That is why the organization also focuses on practical support and collaboration.

A Mission Interrupted
Just as Her First Place began gaining momentum, Walker faced a deeply personal challenge.
She was diagnosed with cancer.
Treatment required her full attention and forced her to slow many of the organization’s activities while she focused on her health. The pause changed the pace of the work, but not her commitment to it.
“It interrupted the work,” she says. “But it never interrupted the mission.”
Her recovery brought a renewed sense of purpose. Walker returned to Her First Place with a clearer understanding of how personal hardship can reshape priorities and strengthen determination.
Today, she is focused on rebuilding the organization’s reach, developing partnerships, and creating more opportunities for women who want to become homeowners.
“I’m rebuilding with even greater purpose,” she says. “Now it’s time to spread the word, raise more money, build more partnerships, and help many more women become homeowners.”
From Foundation to Movement
Walker sees the organization’s next chapter as one of thoughtful growth.
The early work demonstrated that the idea could create meaningful support for individual buyers. The next step is to expand that impact through collaboration with sponsors, donors, lenders, real estate professionals, and community partners.
“This isn’t something one organization can solve alone,” Walker says. “It becomes a movement when people decide to be part of changing someone else’s future.”

Her First Place is built around the belief that each successful home purchase can represent more than a set of keys. It can reflect stability, confidence, and the beginning of a new family story.
For Walker, the organization is not measured only by the number of homes purchased. Its deeper purpose is found in the people who gain knowledge, support, and a clearer path toward ownership.
What began as a book has become a mission rooted in service.
For Walker, every front door opened through that mission represents the possibility of a stronger future.
