Where Do We Go From Here? A Boomer’s Reflection on the Past, Present, and Unstable Future

Nationwide (USANews) At 80 years young, I often find myself reflecting on how the world has shifted sometimes for better, sometimes with great uncertainty. Born into the Boomer generation, I’ve lived through eras many today can barely imagine: from the crackling voice of the first black-and-white television to the global web of cell phones that connect us instantly. From landlines mounted on walls to AI in your pocket. The world has changed but have we changed with it?

A Timeline of Transformation

When I began my journey, the future was built on hard work, stability, and delayed gratification. You worked 40 years for one company and retired with a pension and a gold watch. Today, corporate America no longer offers that kind of longevity or loyalty. The shift from lifetime employment to the gig economy has left many feeling untethered and unsure of their future.

And yet what a time to be alive.

Despite the fractures in our systems and institutions, each generation has played a role in building the present we now stand on. But as we watch the stability of that foundation wobble from economic strain to climate crises, fractured communities to rising mental health challenges we have to ask: Where do we go from here?

My Story: Resilience Over Ruin

I come from humble beginnings in a fatherless household, raised by a single mother after divorce. I raised two children as a single mom myself and spent over five decades as a Registered Nurse. That journey alone taught me the power of compassion, service, and grit. But I didn’t stop there.

When the Internet was just a whisper, no browsers, no websites, just code and curiosity I dove in headfirst. I was one of the early innovators, helping launch some of NASCAR’s first digital stat tracking for the short-track series. I taught myself programming, design, and network building. I didn’t have mentors. I became one. I built communities, nurtured entrepreneurs, and helped people create not just businesses, but lives worth living.

And yes, I’ve faced failures just like anyone else. But I’ve also stared down one of life’s greatest tests: pancreatic cancer. And I won.

The Power of Purpose

What keeps people like me going? What keeps you going?

Purpose. Plain and simple.

We’re not defined by our technology, our income, or even our health. We’re defined by what we do with what we have, especially when times get tough. And I’ve learned that even the greatest technology is useless without humanity guiding it toward good.

The younger generations ask me all the time: “How do you keep going?”

I remind them: failure isn’t final. Reinvention is always possible. And connection—real, authentic human connection—is what saves us in the end.

Hope on the Horizon

I’m proud to have mentored many people, but few have inspired me like Andomo Tolson, a visionary entrepreneur and one of my closest success stories. Andomo has developed an innovative solution that simplifies one of the hardest parts of starting or scaling a business: funding.

His approach is exactly what future generations need an answer to the growing frustration of building something meaningful without access to capital or mentorship. With no reliance on personal credit, no collateral required, and no red tape, he offers a path forward for anyone with a dream and the guts to chase it.

Conclusion: The Bridge We Must Build

Boomers brought forth the dawn of the digital age. Millennials redefined culture and work. Gen Z is demanding change. Each generation has something vital to offer. But our collective future depends on our willingness to listen, collaborate, and support one another across age and experience.

So, where do we go from here?

We go forward together. With courage. With purpose. With legacy in mind and innovation in hand.

And maybe, just maybe, with a little wisdom from someone who’s walked a long road and is still building bridges for those who dare to follow.
