The NFL is set to make history in 2025, as the league announced on September 11 that the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles will play the first-ever regular-season game in South America. The matchup is scheduled to take place on September 6, 2025, at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil.
This marks a major milestone in the NFL’s international expansion, adding South America to the growing list of locations that have hosted regular-season games. The league has previously played in London, Mexico City, Munich, and Frankfurt, with Brazil now becoming the latest destination for NFL action.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed excitement about bringing the game to a passionate South American fan base. “We have seen tremendous growth in American football’s popularity in Brazil and across South America,” Goodell said in a statement. “Bringing a regular-season game to São Paulo is an important step in our mission to globalize the sport.”
The matchup between the Packers and Eagles is a fitting choice, as both franchises have massive fan followings and rich histories. Green Bay, one of the NFL’s most storied teams, will finally play its first international game after previously opting out of past opportunities due to its unique ownership structure. Meanwhile, the Eagles, a perennial contender in recent years, will make their second appearance in an international game.
The decision to expand into Brazil follows years of increasing NFL engagement in South America. Brazil has one of the largest NFL fan bases outside the United States, with millions of viewers tuning in for games each season. The league has also hosted various promotional events and grassroots football initiatives in the region.
With the announcement now official, anticipation for the game will continue to build over the next year. The NFL’s first foray into South America represents a significant step in expanding its global footprint, and if successful, it could pave the way for more games in the region in the future.
