Bill Self made history on November 12, 2024, becoming the winningest coach in Kansas basketball history as the Jayhawks secured a 77-69 victory over Michigan State. The win marked Self’s 591st triumph with the program, surpassing the legendary Phog Allen, who led Kansas from 1919 to 1956.

The milestone moment came in a high-profile matchup as part of the annual Champions Classic, with the Jayhawks facing off against fellow powerhouse Michigan State. The game was tightly contested throughout, with both teams exchanging runs. However, Kansas pulled away late in the second half, fueled by a dominant performance from center Hunter Dickinson, who recorded 24 points and 12 rebounds.

Self, who has been at the helm of the Jayhawks since 2003, has led Kansas to two national championships, 17 Big 12 regular-season titles, and 15 conference tournament championships. His ability to consistently produce elite teams and develop NBA-caliber talent has made him one of the most respected coaches in the game.

“It’s an unbelievable honor,” Self said following the game. “Kansas basketball has such a rich history, and to even be mentioned alongside Coach Allen is something I never could have imagined. This is a credit to all the players and staff who have helped build this program over the years.”

Under Self’s leadership, Kansas has made 20 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and has reached the Final Four four times. His sustained success at one of the premier programs in college basketball makes this record even more remarkable.

With the all-time wins record now in his possession, Self continues to chase further milestones, with the Jayhawks eyeing another deep NCAA Tournament run this season. Meanwhile, Michigan State will look to rebound from the loss as they gear up for Big Ten competition.
