Niloufar Esmaeili

A national medalist and internationally trained specialist, Esmaeili has spent the past several years building American artistic swimming talent from the ground up - producing a Junior Olympic medalist, training the next generation of coaches, and judging at the sport’s competitive standard.

NILOUFAR ESMAEILI HAS SPENT MORE THAN TWO DECADES IN THE WATER - first as a competitive athlete, and later as a coach whose expertise now shapes American artistic swimmers on their own paths toward the podium.

Her career is not defined by a single achievement. It is built on competitive results, advanced academic training, years of hands-on coaching, and a growing body of work dedicated to developing athletes and strengthening the sport in the United States.

An Elite International Foundation

Esmaeili began artistic swimming as a child in Iran and entered serious competition at a young age. By her early teens, she had become a national silver medalist, establishing herself among the country’s accomplished competitive swimmers.

She backed that athletic foundation with a high level of academic pedigree: a bachelor’s degree in sports science and a master’s degree in sports physiology. She later brought that knowledge to Italy, where she continued her studies in physical activity and health promotion while expanding her experience within the European sporting environment.

That combination, high-level competitive experience paired with advanced academic training in human performance became the foundation of her approach to coaching: understanding not only how an athlete performs a movement, but how the body can be systematically prepared to execute it with greater strength, precision, control, and consistency.

A Track Record That Delivers Results

Esmaeili’s work has always extended beyond individual lessons or routines. She has built and managed programs, developed athletes across different levels, and worked to create the kind of training structure that allows talent to progress over time.

In Iran, her coaching produced multiple national medalists. In the United States, that expertise has continued to translate into measurable competitive success.

Solo routines choreographed by Esmaeili have earned multiple Junior Olympic medals, including two bronze medals in consecutive years and a silver medal, demonstrating a consistent record of national level competitive success.

The same expertise that produced national medalists internationally is now producing Junior Olympic medalists in the United States.

Qualified to Judge, Not Just Coach

Esmaeili’s role in artistic swimming extends beyond coaching. She also serves as an official judge, Technical Controller, and Synchronization Controller, roles that require an extremely detailed understanding of technical execution, difficulty, synchronization, scoring standards, and the evolving rules of artistic swimming.

This perspective strengthens her work as a coach since she is able to approach performance from both sides of the competitive equation: preparing athletes to execute difficult skills while understanding how those skills are evaluated in competition.

Her work as an official also broadens her contribution beyond the athletes she coaches directly, placing her within the competitive structure responsible for applying and maintaining the standards of the sport.

Bringing International Expertise to American Athletes

Artistic swimming is an increasingly technical sport. Success now demands far more than choreography and flexibility; athletes must combine strength, endurance, precise technical execution, synchronization, artistry, and increasingly complex acrobatic and hybrid elements.

Esmaeili brings a combination of experience to that environment: a competitive and coaching foundation developed in Iran, advanced academic study in sports science and physiology, further coaching and education in Italy, and hands-on experience developing athletes and programs in the United States.

Her contribution also reaches beyond the swimmers she coaches directly. She has been able to bring her coaching expertise to USA Artistic Swimming’s Rising Star program, working with top selected athletes and contributing her coaching experience within a broader national development environment.

She also mentors coaches, builds structured training systems, and works with athletes at the developmental level, where technical habits are established long before a swimmer reaches an elite stage.

That grassroots work matters. The strength of any high-performance system ultimately depends on the quality of the athletes and coaches being developed years before national-team selection becomes a possibility.

Building for the Long Term in the United States

Esmaeili’s path to America was neither immediate nor conventional.

Her first opportunity came and she took it.

That opportunity became another step forward, eventually leading to an interview for a coaching position in the United States and, ultimately, to San Francisco.

When she arrived in America after a long international journey and hours of immigration and security processing, she was supposed to go home and rest.

Instead, still carrying her luggage from the flight, she asked to go directly to the pool.

She wanted to see where she would be working.

She wanted to begin.

That instinct has defined much of Esmaeili’s career.

Today, she continues to coach, mentor, choreograph, judge, and contribute to the development of artistic swimming in the United States. Her role in the sport has also expanded beyond coaching and officiating, as she now serves as Administrative Chair of the Pacific Association of Artistic Swimming.

Her long-term goal remains helping more American athletes build the technical foundation necessary to pursue national and international competition.

Her story is not built around one breakthrough or one medal.

It is the story of someone who has repeatedly taken what she knows, carried it into a new environment, and built it again, athlete by athlete, coach by coach, program by program.

And now, she has chosen to build in America
